I've got tickets to the Islanders game tomorrow night against my beloved Pittsburgh Penguins (yeah, I know). I've been out to the Coliseum before, but not recently. What route would you recommend, coming from SO? I'm flexible on my departure time (and will definately leave early so I can be out on LI for rush hour). I took the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhattan and Queens Midtown to get to 495 before. But the prospect of driving in Manhattan really doesn't appeal to me lately, so is there an alternate route anyone can share? Thanks! |

Well, my husband just took a trip out to Long Island - instead of going through Manhattan, my father told him to go Turnpike to Goethals Bridge to Verrazano Bridge. It worked well for him... |

Definitely listen to the traffic on the radio before you depart. That could affect your route right there. I just discovered the Bayonne Bridge as an option. Some lights down 440, but far less traffic than over the Goethels (both to SI Expressway, over Verazanno, to Belt to Southern State...) The Holland and over either the Williamsburg, Manhattan, or Brooklyn Bridge to the BQE to the LIE works, but, again, all very traffic dependent. |

All things considered, what route avoiding Manhattan is likely to add the least amount of travel time to my trip? I'm horrible with driving distances around here, so I really don't know. |

The two ways to avoid Manhattan to LI are either the Bayonne/Goethels Bridge through SI to Brooklyn, or over the GWB to the Cross Bronx and over the Whitestone. No traffic, option one is definitely quicker. |

Friday night. Belt Parkway. Forget about it. You'll get all the JFK traffic. Just listen to the radio traffic reports to determine if Manhattan or the GWB will be the lesser evil. |

Take the GW bridge to the Cross-Bronx Expressway to the Throgs Neck Bridge. Once over the bridge, follow to 495 East (joins it at Exit 30). If traffic is light, you can get from SO to exit 30 in maybe 50 minutes. If bumper-to-bumper, double that. One caveat, check the schedule for Yankees home games, you don't want to take the Cross-Bronx with everyone driving to the game. |

3 out of 4 times the GWB to either the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge is the best way to get to LI on a Friday night. Just the same DO listen to the traffic reports on the radio. |

GWB (LOWER LEVEL - for some reason my spouse, a native Longislander, feels very strongly about this) to the Cross Bronx and over the Whitestone - this is how we get to LI...not sure about the rest |

doulamomma, your spouse is ABSOLUTELY right about the lower level (I was born and bred on LI till grade school, and still visit fam. there frequently). So, to repeat, best Option 1: 80, local lanes, GWB, lower level; cross bronx to Throgs Neck to the cross island to the LIE (495) east. best, Option 2: If there is a backup at the cross bronx, try 80, local lanes, GWB, lower level, to harlem river drive, to Triboro, (then I think its whitestone expressway to 495east, but I'm a little fuzzy on details--just follow the signs to eastern LI). all other options---pretty bad, but then again, I've rarely tried the Staten Island options other than to go to JFK. |

ps, Go Isles!!!! (although I'm not optimistic at their chances---but the games with the Pens have been fun this year, so you're probably in for a great show).

Interesting.. obviously, it depends on traffic, but I've taken both the GWB route and the Staten Island Route, I've found the Staten Island route works well from South Orange. But, on a Friday afternoon, going to Long Island could be a mess. Make sure you listen to traffic reports before you go. |

Wow, thanks to all of you! This is one of the reasons why I love this place. I can get people from PA to here, but I'm pretty useless outside of Jersey aside from Manhattan. I think I will follow the GWB/Cross-Bronx/Throgs Neck route. Going through Staten Island just seems way out of the way to me. mwoodwalk, I'm excited to see the game even though I'm likely to come back to SO having seen yet another loss. Even though the Pens just suck, they're still a fun team (when they show up). I was at the game in November when Crosby had his first multi-goal game. |

Many years of frequent back and forth to LI from here - GWB/XBronx can be slow sometimes, but the Belt often STOPS. I never, ever, go SIE/Belt any more. If the GWB is totally messed up I'll go through the city. Counterintuitively, the SI route is actually further to most locations beyond Brooklyn. (Since you actually have to go quite a long way south to get to SI.) |

Thanks to all of you! I utilized the advice here and took the GWB lower/XBronx/Throgs Neck route to get there. Aside from having to go the Grand Central Parkway instead the XIsland, it was very simple and pretty much traffic-free. Then my beloved Penguins actually did something right (for once), shutting out the Islanders 4-0. Remembering to check 1010 before I went too far, I actually came back through the LIE/QnsMidtown/Lincoln Route because it was faster. 1h, 4m from the Coliseum to my apartment. Thanks for all the advice! |
