OK, all you iPod devotees out there...help me! I have had a 20-gigabyte iPod for about 15 months now, with no problems. Only about half of its memory is being used, with about 2000 songs on it. Everything has been fine until now, except this week it has suddenly gone crazy. All of a sudden it won't play certain songs, and if I try to select one artist's entire set of songs, it will scroll through them and skip each one in succession. If I put it on Shuffle, it will play certain songs and skip others in a seemingly random fashion, not letting me intervene or even go back to select them after it has skipped them. It shows the song title, artist, etc. for just a moment, then skips past it. It seems to have developed a mind of its own and will not let me pick songs, no matter what. The weird thing is, it seems to be favoring certain artists when it's on Shuffle -- like it keeps picking Led Zeppelin for some reason. But it will NOT play certain other artists at all, showing the song briefly, then skipping past it. Throughout all this, its battery charge has been fine, and I have cnotiued to charge it. I have not tried re-downloading songs from iTunes into the iPod because I am afraid the files in the iPod ahve been corrupted maybe and am afraid that my entire iTunes library could get infected somehow. HELP! Do I need a new iPod, or is this something that others have experienced? Tomorrow I am going to take it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store, but if it's something simple I'd prefer not to fight the lines over there with my two kids in tow. Anyone? |

Same thing happened to me. I ended up re-installing the software and everything is fine now. Gives you a chance to clean house. |

Did you try resetting it? It won't erase anything, just reboots the system. |

OK, no, I didn't try resetting or rebooting it. I didn't even know you could do that. How does one do it? Honestly, I don't think I have the packaging that came with the iPod -- was there something in the box I should have kept (a CD-ROM, for instance) for this purpose? Is there a way I download something from the Apple site? I am clueless. |

I have to do this constantly. Just hold down the menu and center buttons for about 10 seconds, until the apple icon appears. (I don't have my ipod in hand right now, so I hope I've got that right) That should do it--at least until the next time it happens. Check the website. |

Thanks! I did it, and it seems to have worked! I'm so relieved I don't have to buy a new iPod nor go stand in line at the Apple store this weekend. I wonder why some iPods need this done more frequently than others....mine is 15 months old and gets very heavily used -- as in, twice a day for about 45 minutes each time during my commute, plus a lot of the time when I am driving. I guess I've been lucky I've gone this long without having to do this. Anyway, THANK YOU! |

Bad software implimentation would be my guess. In other words, bugs. |

Alleygater, That would be the firmware not software on the iPod, but most users don't have any trouble. I, for example, have had to reset my two-year-old iPod once. Z, I'd say you were more typical than lucky. Sometimes things need to be reset. Imagine how many consecutive hours your iPod has been up and running without any trouble. One reset every 15 months isn't too shabby. |

Fantastic! Glad it worked - anything to avoid the "Genius" Bar! |
