I know this has been discussed recently, but I can't find the thread, so please help me out. A good friend has recommended that I try acupunture for my migraines and back pain. Can you recommend someone locally (i.e. not in NYC)? Have you tried it? What do they do to you? Does it hurt? It's not covered by my insurance so an idea of the cost would also be appreciated.

Thanks

My good friend used an acupuncturist that she swears by, while she was undergoing fertility treatments (yes the acupuncture was somehow supposed to help her conceive.)

Healthy twin girls were born in late November!

His name is Steven Latten (973) 376-5522

PS. No personal experience myself. Please post if you do find relief using an acupuncturist - I'm very curious if it works.

I don't know. I have had acupuncture twice, and I was very nervous about it.

I guess you could say I was on pins and needles about the whole thing.

I have had good results with Constance Fraser. (973) 538-6548. She works out of her apartment in Morristown and maybe one or two other locations. I can't remember where she placed the needles, but her treatment was very relaxing and I may have even fallen asleep.

Thank you for the leads. Very funny Innis. Once I start treatment, I will post here to let you know whether it is working or not.

I remember someone recommending a woman practitioner in West Orange in the old thread, anyone remember???

I had very good results with Chris Butler from Maplewood Holistic on Parker Avenue. My insurance covers it with the help of their on staff MD who consults initially. Very wonderful treatment by Chris, relaxing and helpful. Not an instant cure, acupuncture takes time.

I have been going to acupuncturists for over 10 years. I used to have two different acupuncturists in NY. One who took a more holistic, chinese medicine approach for a variety of ailments and one who did trigger point acupuncture - which was for muscle spasms. I have seen Chris Butler and even took my daughter to him and was very comfortable with his knowledge. However, I am still looking for someone with that "trigger point" approach that used to work so very well for me. You can send me a pl if you have any specific acupuncture questions, as I've been to many over the years.

esq2, the woman that I recommend in West Orange is Dr. Xiuxia Yang (goes by Susan). Started going very recently for some unrelenting back discomfort, and I LOVE it. This coming from a lifelong needle phobe! No, it doesn't hurt when they insert the needles. They are very thin. The thing you will feel is a very slight, brief muscle twing when she turns the needles after inserting them. She calls it "hooking the chi" and likens it to when you hook a fish, if you've ever done that.

The best part is after the needles are in, she puts on relaxing music and a heat lamp, turns out the lights and leaves you to relax for about an hour. I assume the procedure is the same for everyone.

I highly, highly recommend you try it. It hasn't been around for thousands of years for nothing.

I don't have her number on hand right now, but I'm sure she's listed. I'll post it later.

WendyP that is the one I remembered, thank you for posting! Glad to hear it is working for you. I am going to call around and see who has better times/days for appts.

Reesa - Have you looked into Sharma Holistic Center? I called and from the description they gave me it sounds like they may offer what you are looking for.

Has anyone tried Sharma and can give feedback?

You may want to look into Shakti too. I think they offer it as well.
