Query -- What would be the norm re: notice to a nanny when you are letting her go? I will stop working and I can't afford a full time nanny anymore. How much notice would you give and is there any severance involved?}}}

Do you love her? If yes,I would give at least 2 weeks notice and probably a week's severance (or whatever bonus you gave at the holiday times). I'd also offer to try to help her find another family or at least to provide a good reference.

If you didn't love her, I'd consider giving one weeks pay and notice effective immediately, at the time you are ready to take care of your kids yourself. You can't really know if they will leave you high and dry those last two weeks.

The closer you are and the longer she was with you, the more time/generous severance I would think.

For a nanny you respect and want to preserve a relationship with, I would give as much advance notice as possible and be up front about severence. One rule of thumb (which I'm sure is not used by all) is one week's salary per year of service.
