This subject is a minefield, but I know that MOL has a lot of readers and i'm hoping that maybe a few can give me some advice on this of how to start! How do you go about looking for a publisher for a series of childrens stories? I have "Something". I do not know if I should approach an editor and on from there as one person suggested, or go straight for a publisher. I have been told by a publisher who does not handle childrens books (a friend of mine gave him some of my work to get an opinion) that I am on to a winner, but that it is imperative that I have an illustrator who can truly portray the characters. I hear that some publishers have their own illustrators and will not consider work with illustrations existing, and others will...... Can anyone offer me any advice or avenues to explore? Thank you |

SOP: My wife is an editor at Scholastic Books. I'm sure she would talk to you about your project. If you want, e-mail me your contact info at zeidnerk@aol.com. I'll pass it on to her. |

You could also join our children's writers group. I plan for it to be a source of exchanging information about the publishing world and gathering information about various editors/agents, as well as a place to share and critique ongoing work.

You also should get an agent who can best vet the idea/manuscript and its feasibility in the children's book market. Unless an artist is also the writer, it is rare that the writer would provide the illustrator. That is done by the house. |
