Does anyone know about them? I did a lot of research on diamonds but don’t know the difference between an Emerald and a Chicklet. I think I’m looking for a necklace and matching earrings. |

Oh good lord! no no, I was thinking something a little smaller, maybe $500 for the set. It's a B-Day present, not a gift to a foreign country.

First, http://www.gia.edu/library/4463/emerald.cfm That's the background with the typical "fixes" that stores do to make their stock look better. Next, there are so many places that sell synthetic emeralds as "emeralds" that it isn't funny. If its shamrock green and perfectly clear, you will either pay a vast fortune or its synthetic. When I was shopping for emeralds, I saw many with fissures and fuzziness to them. The deeper the green, the clearer the stone, the more valuable. Here's a good quote: When shopping for emeralds, keep in mind that the gems are judged by size, color, clarity and cut (although because of the stone's penchant for inclusions, a lesser clarity is acceptable). Color, extremely important, is broken down into three considerations: hue (the basic color of the stone); tone (the "depth" of color from "light" to "dark"); and saturation (the purity of the green and the level of other hues, if present). Fissures, or cracks, are common in emeralds. Try to avoid those that penetrate too deeply into the stone, thus making it more susceptible to splitting. Good Luck - I found a beauty at the, now closed, Morristown Antique Center. You may want to try other reputable Antique dealers. They have emeralds that are often untreated and lovely.

Auctions are a great idea... Darn - you just missed the Dawson and Nye auction in Morristown last night. I can highly reccommend them. Check out their website for prices from last nights sale (if they are posted yet) and look for next month's catalog items to be posted soon. http://www.dawsonandnye.com |

Emeralds can be more expensive than diamonds. But, if YOU like the color and clarity, it is only $500 which isn't a lot when it comes to jewelry. |

It's alot for me. Hell I could get 10 Playstation games, or Yankee tickets, or play poker with it, or get beer, or get a new camera, or a neat gadget, or beer, or fly to vegas, or 1 year of OnStar, or a new model boat, or a bike, or a canoe! |

I agree...you saved up and bought a beautiful wooden boat for yourself when you had enough. Use the $500 on something else for her now and save up to buy the "good stuff" in emeralds when you can spend more. I thought this was the "gift for the bride" thing. (My husband and I bought each other killer cowboy boots as our gifts to each other.) |

You didn't mention a ring, but word to the wise: we had channel set emerald and sapphire bands a few years ago. Got older, got fatter. Found out that we couldn't have the rings resized because it would risk cracking the emeralds. They are too delicate. Would've had to remove them and do a whole new setting. The Monster solved the problem by throwing TS's band down the sink. We replaced it with a diamond band, which he also threw down the sink. She then learned that she can't leave rings anywhere. He gets ahold of everything. Last night, he threw my custom teeth-bleaching tray into the toilet. But that's another thread. Save up for something good. Or buy one piece now and the other for another B-day or Xmas. I take it that she's a May baby? Me too. No wonder that you are secretly in love with me.

Yep, May baby. So is the consensus that I can't get a nice necklace for $500?

I was given some pearl earrings from Iridesse (there is one in Short Hills Mall). They are a small little pearl dangle below a small sapphire. I think the same earrings come with an emerald instead. (The earrings are not on the Irridesse web site unfortunatley.) They shouldn't cost too, too much. |

Is it a pendant or a full blown necklace? Is it a reputable merchant? Do you like it? Do you think she will? If yes to all the above, fine, if not... |

After you've saved up.. VIG and I will introduce you to Ralph - a local designer who does amazing things with gems. Right VIG? In the meantime - like VIG says.. as long as you think she'll like it and the merchant is reputable.. what's not to love? |

This is getting embarrassing. Brett, can we please just discuss this in private so the entire community doesn't have to read about my precious stones? |

Where's this? Huh? Why was I not informed? I am a May baby as well. What I have learned is that emeralds are very soft stones and can be easily lost. Make sure the setting is very secure. |

over a ct. of emeralds for that low? they must be tiny stones. but, like I said, if you like the color/clarity, it's not a fortune, go for it. why don't you post a pic so we can give you our real opinions... |

They probably won't be emeralds, but you could find an excellent original necklace/earring combo for $500 at The Tenth Muse on Baker in Maplewood! I have never been unable to find a great gift for someone in that store and always find stuff I'd like for me too! It's worth a shop and they wrap everything so nicely! |

Emerald isn't the only choice you have if you are looking for a birthstone/month stone. I have attached a link here which may (or may not!) help. Emeralds are so tricky. For good ones with everything the way they should be, the sky is the limit price-wise. They are very weak stones, and the cheaper ones can be weird colour green and cloudy/cracked etc.. If you are intent on buying emeralds, than as previous posters have already said, choose a jeweller with a good reputation! I wish you well in your search! http://www.bernardine.com/birthstone/may.htm

Other alternative gems to very $$$ expensive better quality Emeralds are green Tourmalines, Tsavorite Garnets (a favorite of mine), or the lighter green stone, the Peridot. http://www.gemstone.org/gem-by-gem/gem-by-gem.html
