What do other people do about giving their caregivers vacation time? How many weeks do you give? Do you encourage them to take it when you take it or allow them to choose whenever they want? Our caregiver is part-time and we want to treat her as well as possible. |

Remind me to look it up in my Miss Manners book. I believe it is in there. I believe she recommends two weeks a year of PAID vacation to all domestic workers. Our housekeeper seems to prefer to work 52 weeks a year, so we give her two extra weeks' pay, i.e. we pay for 54 weeks and receive 52 weeks of work.

Our nanny gets nearly as much vacation as we get -- having stayed at our companies for years, we are both up to 4 weeks (lucky us, lucky her!). Occasionally, when we use a vacation day for something in-town, we'll still have her work. We make sure to schedule one of our weeks in late August, when she likes to take a back to school vacation with her kids. |

I get a lot of vacation time so our babysitter will get 4 weeks paid vacation, national paid holidays plus plus 3 sick days. We did ask her to coordinate her vacation time w/ours and she seems fine w/that. That said, 2 weeks paid vacation seems to be standard. Best, Madhu |
