I could have sworn that TurboTax offered a rebate for e-filing, which made filing electronically free, but I can't seem to find anything in the software about it.

Did they discontinue that this year, or am I missing something?

It was discontinued this year. I had to pay to e-file both federal and state. Which sucks, but I still would rather hand over $15 than print, stamp, wait, etc. There is still free e-filing from several online services if you meet certain criteria, but I was lazy and wanted to import everything from last year.

I understand why Intuit and other providers charge for e-file. It's a service they are providing and it costs them something to provide it (although I suspect that they profit fairly well on it) and that's business.

However, it seems to me that the IRS ought to offer a credit for this, because it clearly saves them money in processing the returns. As it stands now, it is only a miscellaneous itemized deduction (for tax preparation costs) which doesn't help most of us since it is subject to the 2% of income floor.
