When decorating a nursery/bedroom, do most people try & mix up the sizes of the furniture (i.e. - one piece tall & one piece short/wide.) We're in the process of buying bookshelves & dressers. - Can you tell we're new at this?! Thanks for any input! |

Absolutely. Just go with it. It's a learning process and you're going to need to learn it as you go. Have fun. Relax. Mistakes are easily fixable. Perhaps the best idea is to buy furniture that could be used in several rooms in your home, not just specifically "nursery" furniture. Lord knows the pieces in my house spend quite a bit of time moving from room to room, and will probably continue to do so for the foreseeable future! |

Thanks matb! Do you think it would look weird if we bought a bookshelf & dresser that were essentially the same size? I realize it's subjective, so I'm just asking for opinions. Thanks again!!!! |

I guess it would depend on how you place them in the room. If they were side by side, it might look weird. If they were on opposite walls, you might be O.K. The beauty part about furniture is you can move it around until you find an arrangement that's pleasing. Maybe buy one piece at a time. Buy the dresser now and the bookshelf at a later date, because a newborn isn't going to have a pressing need for a bookshelf. Then take your time and look around for the second piece. If they aren't "matchy-matchy" it might be more interesting, add some variety to the room. Or, rather than buy the bookshelf as a piece of furniture, get some cute ones you can put on the wall. When my first was born I got some really cute bunny shelves to hang on the wall from Ikea. The good thing about this is you're not locked in to a piece of furniture for the rest of your life, but you still have a place to put some books. Another idea might be to get your hands on a few of these specialty home decorating magazines that feature lots of pictures of kids bedrooms, pull out photos of the rooms you like and try to duplicate them. I know having photo references has always been a big help for me. Also, catalogs like Pottery Barn Kids and Company Kids who sell kids bedding have lots of pictures of really cute kids bedrooms. |
