Didn't know where to post this.....Received my PSE&G bill yesterday..and what had been 20+ dollars for years all of a sudden was $181.00. This is automatically deducted from my checking account so it would have been a surprise if I hadn't checked. I was told the meter was read incorrectly and they would send me a corrected bill. But if I hadn't called, an additional $160.00 would have been taken from my checking account. So make sure to check all bills.

Sherri De Rose, how the heck has your PSEG bill been $20 for "years"? Do tell!

Perhaps Sherri is talking about her water bill from NJ American Water if she lives in Maplewood.

I did actually have a meter reading error from PS&G, however -- I thought they were just "catching up" after the winter, but when I called to check, they realized it was an incorrect reading. The bill was double what it should have been.

I realize that could happen from PSE&G but we were questioning the generally $20/month statement from Sherri.

Hi All,
Yes..about $20.00 give or take...No Kids, oil heat, gas hot water, gas stove that hubby does most of the cooking on...make sure I shut a light as I leave a room (Oh wait that's JCP&L. Maybe that's part of the reason. Does Maplewood use PSE&G for their electricity as well?)...not a fanatic, just don't waste stuff. Like NEVER let the water run while doing the dishes (actually maybe that helps, because the gas hot water heater is not firing up). I also wash out zip lock bags, air dry paper towels that have only been used for water (that's nothing, my mother-in-law used to save each half of a clothespin and build a new one with the parts).

Even with all of that. e.g., turning off lights when not in the room, not wasting water, etc., I still don't know how you're maintaining your bill @ $20/month. That's incredible to say the least.

I think I understand now. Sherri is just talking about her gas bill not her electric bill. Do I understand that right Sherri? Inquiring minds and jealous bill payers want to know.

Wendy, affirmative, just the gas. Normal electric bill in the winter is about $65.00.

Thanks for the explanation. But I'm still impressed by your conservation measures in both the gas and electric uses in your home!

How do you have JCP&L in Maplewood? We have PSE&G for both gas and electric and I thought that was universal here (?)

When was the last time PSEG came in and read the gas meter? If has been awhile you might be in for a big shock. Last year PSEG didn't read my gas meter for several months, so they estimated it. When they finally read it and sent me an accurate bill I nearly shite.

Come to think of it, PSE&G has not been here in months to read the meter. This happened once before, a couple of years ago: they didn't read the meter, and when they did, they realized that they had been overcharging me (SHOCKING) and sent a refund check of -- get this -- over $1,200.

A $20 gas bill sounds like a dream to me. However, it's probably what it costs per day to heat my foyer.

We got totally screwed by PSEG meter reading when we bought our house (naive 1st time buyers)- they didn't come out to read it when changing owners (???! thought they would do this without us having to ask)- so we were stuck with $1500 payment because they had no record of the gas meter being read for 3 years, and it had been underestimated that entire time. We negotiated them down to half. Please help me spread the word to new homebuyers- check and make sure all meters have been read when setting up your utilities!!

Jennifer: Sorry to hear about that. My attorney was insistent on having the meters read the day before the closing when we bought, and 8 years later when we sold the buyer's attorney did likewise. I would have thought all attorneys were that diligent.

ES&L- sounds like you had a good attorney. Our situation was complicated slightly by a one month rental by the owner, so our closing happened one month before the utilities switched over. Live and learn, I guess!
