There is a patterned blue tile inlay at the top of our brick house. I just bought some shutters and am going to paint them. I thought I'd try to match the blue of the tile to bring out this feature.

Then my mother states completely as a matter of fact that a brick house with white trim should have black shutters.

Who has an opinion? Is there a color that is traditional in a 1920's brick building. (Old pictures = black and white. Hmm, maybe that's where my mom got her information.)

Do a very dark blue in the same color family as your tile--it will look elegant and wonderful.

I am with KRNL.

"Black" in San Francisco is actually a very, very, very dark green. The proportions are something like 10 Black to 1 Hunter Green.

The same with boats. "Intrepid Blue" is a name for some paints but in reality it is a very special formula of copious amounts of black mixed with a specific blue.

Think of your new custom color as the only one in town and be proud of it!

(BTW: Love that tri-delt house!)

Another vote for KNRL's splendid suggestion.

JB, last evening driving through Upper Montclair I spied brick houses with:

Black
White
Cream
Brown
Taupe
Sage
Hunter Green
Dusty Blue
Navy Blue
Gold

I do love your and KRNL's idea of coordinating with the tile.

Directly related to this conversation -

My Mom is clearing out her garage, including 5 pairs of authentic early 1920's wooden shutters from a Maplewood Dutch Colonial.

Shutters were removed from the house about 30 years ago, and garaged ever since. When the house was re-sided with vinyl, vinyl shutters went up too.

Shutters are in good repair, should only need a quick clean up and a new coat of paint.

2 pairs are 16" x 59"
3 pairs are 16" x 55"

Also available are the louvered doors at left, which are each 14 7/8" x 79 1/2"

Best Offer, pickup in Maplewood (Maplecrest Park area)

Hoping someone doing a restoration will find these useful. Could also be used together as a privacy screen.

As recent purchaser of shutters I know there are two bits of information that will affect the buyer's mounting.

1. Are there hinges on them?

2. Were they mounted on wood or brick house? (The hinges are different.)

Good Luck selling them, and thanks everyone for your thoughtful and tasteful advice. So far HOMMELL and my mother are the only two dissenting voices. That's helpful. Even after all of these years, her opinion still has a creepy power over me.

But it's not as strong as MOL!

Shutter hardware for these shutters is inexpensively available at www.shuttercraft.com, if not already on the shutters, or if someone needs a different type. You can get both the 2" (for wood siding) and 4" (for brick siding) offset, or an adjustable variety. Only $20-25 per window. They also sell the shutterdogs- those S-shaped holdbacks.

Those doors are gorgeous. I'm measuring my doorway tonight.
