Does anyone have any information or experience with Direct Buy? http://www.directbuy.com/ I know I have seen this discussed in a thread before, but I was unable to find it in the archives. |

Depends on what you need it for. I built a house a few years ago and used Direct Buy to furnish it. My cabinets at Home Depot Expo center would have cost $30000 - I paid $12000. Furniture is a good deal. If you are not going to be making multiple purchases, then no, it doesn't make sense to join to buy a couch. |

For most of the furniture, appliances, etc you end up paying so much for handling and delivery it is like buying the item at a retail store on sale. For example (and I'm guestimating here) I bought a bedroom set at 40% off retail. Retail price was $10,000. My price was $6,000. Handling and delivery was $1500, bringing my price up to $7500. Retail store had a 20% off sale, bringing their price down to $8000. Add in the fees you paid to Direct Buy and you really didn't save that much. And you have to figure out how to get the furniture from their warehouse to your house, which could be added cost if it is a lot of big stuff and you don't have a truck. Plus their customer service sucks because all they really want is your initial membership fee. They get no money for selling the product so they really don't care if or when you get it and what shape it is in. Finally they don't have a showroom, just a bunch of books from manufacturers. So they way you shop is to get a list of the manufacturers they represent, figure out where to see the stuff first hand, go to see it, decide you want it, go back to the DB facility to order. And they don't carry all manufacturers, so you will probably see something at Ethan Allen or Restoration Hardware that you really want but DB doesn't carry it. In the end most people just don't save enough to justify it. Those cabinets are a big exception. |
