Since Wayside Gardens in Short Hills closed down, I have no idea where to buy propane for my outdoor grill. Someone mentioned that Home Depot on Springfield Ave might sell propane, but I want to go somewhere which is a little less crowded. Any other places for propane tank refills around here? Thanks. |

Woolley Fuel. They are an MOL sponsor. You can take your propane tank and they will fill it up and give it back to you. I think many places swap tanks. Mine is newish so I prefer not to swap. |

> The Gas Station (Delta?)on Valley and Oakland used to sell it. Haven't there been a few threads in the past on MOL about Delta? The threads were to the effect that Delta would routinely overcharge people on gas purchases... |

Pioneer Rental on Passaic Avenue in Chatham. Bummer about Wayside Gardens, always liked them. Who knows Wooley's hours? I used to use Pioneer before I discovered Wayside. According to their website Pioneer is open 7 days a week. Head the back way to Livingston Mall, i.e., via Short Hills by taking Parsonage Hill Road toward Livingston. Cross over JFK Parkway. At the next light (where you'd turn right heading up to SO Ave for the mall), turn left onto North Passaic Ave. They are located about 1 mile on the left. |

Make sure you go to a place that refills your existing tank. Places like Home Depot exchange your empty for a full one and you can end up with a lemon. Wayside really closed? That's a bummer. |

I've always taken our propane tanks to be refilled @ Home Depot on Springfield Avenue. |

Agree with dave23. Pioneer fills your own tank. The prices are on their website. It's a cool place if I remember. And having to check myself, I called Wayside and their number was disconnected - "no further information available." Kibbegirl, I think the question was where, besides HD, because of the crowds, etc.

I've only encountered the mad rush at HD on the weekends. I've never had a problem other than that. I so appeciate the other locations to refill, though. I just hate driving around with those tanks in my car! |

Agreed about HD if you can get there during the week. However, even when I didn't work full-time and could get there during the week, I still found so much about the store not pleasant, from the lack of customer service to the long lines at the register. Since no one answered my Woolley question, I found out myself. Woelley is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. For those who can get there during the week, it certainly beats HD even if their price might be a buck or two more. As for me, I'll revisit Pioneer and/or check out the other suggestion made above - Dryers Lumber. |

Just out of curiousity - has anyone had any issues with the Blue Rhino tank exchange? Up until now, I have been switching tanks at Depot or Lowes. Is there a good reason to stop this, and get the tanks refilled elsewhere? How does it compare on price?

Not knowing any better, I exchanged my new tank for an old prefilled one at HD. Cut to a couple of months later when I took it to Wayside to be filled, where I discovered that it was leaking and had to buy another new one.

A bit of a drive, but I suggest Strickland Propane in Arlen, Texas. Ask for Hank Hill. |

SO Ref is referring to King of the Hill, an animated show on Fox. Denco is on Valley St and Oakland Ave. Delta is on Springfield and Millburn Aves.

Does anyone keep an extra tank around for quick switches in the event of mid-bbq gas outage? I'm thinking of buying a 2nd one for that reason. Where would I buy the actual tank, and does anyone know what they cost? |

moving - we are planning on getting a second tank actually. Next time I'm at Wooley, I'm going to pick one up. We like using Wooley, but they're only open during the week, which isn't that convenient. I use the grill A LOT (I've been known to shovel a path through the snow on my deck to grill in the winter), so I go through tanks pretty quickly. They cost $47 at Wooley. |

moving - yes - I definitely keep a second tank handy. Nothing like running out halfway through a grill session. Costco does a pretty decent deal on empty tanks - I think something like $25 (I could be wrong though, so don't quote me!). Actually last time I was in Costco, they had a number of 100lb propane tanks. However, the thought of that much propane in the vicinity of my house was not such as great though - as was the prospect of lugging such a big tank to get it refilled. |

ooohh $25 -- that's a good reason to join Costco (I've never been to one). Re storage, I figured if I store the extra one in a short lidded rubbermaid-type garbage can under my deck, it will keep it from rusting out. I was worried about having all that propane until I realized storing one there couldn't be any different that the fact that there's a propane tank sitting on my deck all year round. |

... one word of warning about Costco, LilLB - my wife and I have termed it the '$100 place'. Basically, if you can walk out of there spending less than $100, you've had a good day That said, aside from reasonably priced propane tanks, they do have a lot of great stuff. And if you like grilling, you can get some great deals on meat. |

I have been avoiding Costco mostly because I worry about the "100 place" problem. Target is a bad enough disease, I'm not sure if I want to add Costco to the list.... |

Jason, $100 bucks? You guys get off easy. We go to Costco every month or two and stock up on basics, which are a good deal. However, to get to the groceries, soda and bottled water you have to walk through the electronics, books, yard, clothing, etc. displays. We usually manage to spend a couple of hundred bucks, minimum, on top of what we went for in the first place. I am pretty sure they sell the groceries and staples at or below cost and make it up on the discretionary purchases everyone makes when they go there. |

Bob K - unfortunately we seem to end up in Costco more than once a month, so those $100 bills add up in different ways That said, I agree with what you say - there's a lot of temptation to get past before you get to the mundane stuff. Doesn't help that the first thing you see when you walk in the E. Hanover store is a humungous plasma TV! |

Costco has a great collapsible ladder for $100, as well as the best shelving systems I've ever seen (big, chrome and on wheels if you want them to move). We always spend a few hundred dollars when we go, but (for the most part) the money is well spent. |

I know that Millstone in Maplewood was considering refilling propane tanks. They were supposedly going to do it for last summer but didn't get to it. I bet if enough people expressed a desire for it, they'd move ahead with it! The good thing about Wayside was that they would actually refill your own tank, rather than switching it with an older prefilled tank, which I personally preferred. My hope is that Millstone will also offer this service! Call them and let them know if you'd be a regular propane customer! (973) 763-6633. |

For years, I'd drive to Gas-Arc Co, Lakeside Ave & Standish Ave in West Orange. It's actually very easy to get there, straight across valley st, (name changes to scotland road & high streets) and left on Lakeside. They refill your tank while you wait. I've found though that Home Depot can be faster, since the tanks are already filled, and the wait is about the same even if there's a line at HD. Plus, while HD exchanges tanks, they often repaint tanks to avoid rust so they last longer, and I've often exchanged tanks for newer ones.
