Anyone have a water birth and/or labor in a tub? If so, were you pleased with your experience? What professionals assisted you and where did you do this? Would you those professionals again? Would you do a water birth/labor again? Anythng you didn't like about it? |

I did a water labor (and almost water birth) in a tub at Mountainside hospital w/ Avalon Midwives (JoAnne Yeates was the attending Midwife). It was amazing. I had unbearable contractions before getting in the tub. I was 2 cm dialated. One hour later in the relaxing warm water and I was ready to push. My son was ten pounds. And I have to say, it was a thousand times easier than my 7 lb girl I had at St. Barnabas lying on my back while fending off the anasthesiologist. My only regret is not staying in the tub. The change of pace and the scramble for the guerney for fear my son would be born in transit was not consistent with my serene solitude, floating (and moaning) in the dimly lit room... Also, JoAnne was amazing. I requested no heplock, she said no problem. She was quiet yet encouraging, letting me and my body make the birth decisions... |

Hi, Oakland. All three of our children were born in a portable tub we set up in the spare bedroom and my wife found it invaluable for labor and birthing. As you may have guessed, water birth works for us and we'd do it again. Judy Hagen is the Certified Nurse Midwife who acted as primary care provider. We'd use her again and recommended anybody even remotely interested take a look at her site: http://www.babycatcher.com/ The following statements have been cleared (or were dictated) by the aforementioned wife: For #1, which turned out to be a long, tedious back labor, the tub was useful for pain relief as well. For 2 and 3, it was only needed for birthing. Water is a good thing to have, but until you are actually in labor you won't know if it is right for you. For #1 the tub was rented from Waterbirth International for about $240, they are also available from Aquadoula. By the time #2 came along, our midwife had acquired a few of these and provided one at no charge. |

I labored in the tub at Mountainside too (and JoAnne Yates was my midwife as well). Recommend both highly. www.avalonmidwives.com |

I agree you won't know if it's right for you until the moment. I loved the tub for a while with my 2nd child, then it just started to make me more tired, and a little agitated, so I had to get out. |
