Approximately how much should I spend on a bridal shower gift? My niece is getting married in August and my daughter will be a jr. bridesmaid. We've already given an engagement gift and of course, we'll be giving a wedding present (check). Personally, I am put off by these "parties", but that's another topic... They're registered at Macy's and Fortunoff. Many of their choices have been fulfilled, but there are still some things available. I don't want to be considered a cheapskate nor do I want to spend a fortune. Help!

Well then, think about something in the $35-$50 range. Sorry, but that's about the going rate for these events. You are involved in the wedding (daughter) and you are "related." That's really not that expensive in 2006 shower gifts (heck, I was paying those prices back in the mid-80's). When in doubt, don't be cheap!

Is there some kind of family heirloom you can hand down (that's not earmarked for your children)?

Honestly, do you even have to go to the shower? Personally, I can't see the relevance of those parties except to garner more gifts. Those things are so contrived and I would bet she still has fun even without her Aunt Cats. Sorry - I despise obligatory gift-giving.

Aunt Cats's non-attendence might upset her sibling, the parent of the bride. I wouldn't suggest she not attend, unless she wants to cause a cats-astrophic family feud. Not worth it.

I do think a thoughtful, personal gift from an aunt would be very welcome

I was able to find a great wooden cutting board in Maplewood at Kokoro. Spent $50, but it's something very useful (and tasteful, in my opinion) - not your typically boring towels, sheets, place settings, etc. Thanks for the suggestions! Las - I totally agree with you, but we all must do our duty...like it or not.
