Don't get me wrong, I love being with my kids--I am one of the many Maplewood/South Orange dads who really loves being in his kids' world (which is one reason I love being in M/SO so much). And I adore being on vacation with them, as we are now in Boca Raton. We are having lots of fun together in Florida, going to skate parks, fan boat rides to see alligators, shopping at flea markets, deep sea fishing, and hanging out at the pool. But being a single parent on vacation with three kids is tough. My parents are on a cruise (we are using their house), and I know absolutely no adults down here except one very old aunt who is not always present, if you get my drift. I now know every Nickelback and Bon Jovi song by heart; can name over 30 distinct skateboard moves; worked my way through the entire Encyclopedia Brown canon; and have seen Benchwarmers twice. I am craving an adult conversation, a few minutes away from fraternal internecine warfare over who gets to sit in the seat by the car window, a long walk in peace and quiet as the sun sets. Okay, thanks, I feel better venting. Off to the next skate park on the itinerary. Viva La Bam! (if you get this reference, welcome to the club) |

Aren't there several MOLers in the Boca area? Maybe you could get together with Oracle? |

Shoots, Wellington in North of Boca. It's nestled between Lakeworth and Royal Palm Beach. We're near the Mall at Wellington Green. It's a large equestrian area. Very Maplewoodish (to an extent) |

ESL, please join the single and custodial fathers' network. They saved my life many times, and I am currently hoping to return the favor. Have a rotation in the car, as I did. Base it on today's date. When the date is a multiple of 3, the oldest sits in the front. Safety be damned; those internecine battles are more dangerous. When it's a multiple of three plus one, the middle kid gets the front seat. When it's a multiple plus two, the youngest gets it. This puts space between the two in the back. Work out another system for those days after the 27th or 30th of the month.

Oh, and warn them well that when an adult is in the car, the adult gets the front passenger seat. I had the foresight to warn them for when I'd be dating or married, both of which eventually happened.

Dating? With three young kids in my life? No worries about sharing the front seat for a few years! (Just kidding, Tom. I know you dated when your girls were young--but it takes a brave woman given my kids). |
