Hi folks, Has anyone driven via Springfield Avenue from Maplewood to Newark during morning rush hour? Mapquest says 5 or 6 miles and about 15 minutes but I have jury duty and have to report at 9:15AM. I'm planning on leaving at 8:30. Anyone have any experience to relate? Thank you. |

I would think that your timeline is appropriate, at least at first, till you get it down. I have driven to the train stations, and to Social Security (on Springfield, pretty close to downtown) at that time. Oddly enough, I find it way faster than suing the highways, even with the lights and similar, because everyone seems to discount it. I suspect you'll lose most of your time to getting into the specific parking garage you need. |

Many times. It's fine. It goes right to the court parking lot. Taking 78 to that Clinton Ave. exit might be faster though. |

I often take Springfield Ave into Newark during rush hour. It works, but it's irritating and slow. The unexpected WILL happen. Allot 45 minutes for parking, etc, and you will be there early. I recently did the trip at 5am, and without traffic, it took 22 minutes.

Tom's right. I used to do this commute. Many, many lights and people making left hand turns and occasional double parkers. Avoid 78 (which is no better at all) but give yourself the time. I was always amazed that 4 miles routinely took 30 minutes plus parking (altho parking for jury duty is very simple) and sometimes took 45 to 55 minutes. Ugh! CG, I can get to the West Side of Jersey City and park in 35 minutes nearly all the time. (Of course it's saner when I give myself 40-45 minutes!) 12 miles, I believe. |

Actually, I've sometimes had better luck with South Orange Ave into Newark than Springfield Ave. Both converge right near the courthouse. Both suck near the parkway, but I think Springfield Ave is worse. |

I generally take South Orange Avenue into Newark, but I can't say I have had good luck with it. During rush hour, there are quite a few buses on the road, causing endless delays, and, in at least one case (mine) a major accident. If Springfield Avenue works for you, and if you leave with ample time, you should be fine. |

Ask all you like. This is MOL. Yeah, South Orange Avenue can be a tad better, but only a tad.

South Orange Ave has definitely become my way to go to the GSP north, and maybe even south. It's the fastest way there, depending on where in town I am. |

Driving on Springfield is very frustrating. When one light turns green, it's just when the next one turns red; driving on the left lane gets you stuck behind someone turning left, driving on the right gets you stuck behind a double parked car; one time as i was driving on the longest stretch with no lights already close to Newark, a van comes from opposite direction and makes a U-turn right in front of me, 20 feet from my car, without even slowing down, forcing me to hit my brakes and having my car sliding sideways and stopping inches before the guy... He didn't even slowed down! My husband was called to be part of 10 weeks Jury Duty, 2 years ago. It seemed most of the cases he witnessed were crimes happening on or around Springfield somewhere between Maplewood and Newark (during day and night time) - every week it seemed he had a terrible story of a crime from that area to say when he would come home. Both of these reasons and the fact that it would take 30-45 (very stressful) minutes to get to Newark, i decide to always take 78. I take 15-20 minutes to get to Newark, from Maplewood now. (And I go there around 4 times a week). |

Taking South Orange Ave is fine. I had no trouble getting to jury duty around that time. Glad you won't have to go though! |
