Anyone have any recommendations? I would like a 2nd opinion regarding a blocked tear duct my 7 month old is suffering from. |

Dr. Jay Bernstein, in Westfield. He's amazing with my son. 908 317-9811. I know he's a little further away, but just in case you want another option/opinion, I highly recommend him. |

My daughter (now almost 7) had a blocked tear duct which ultimately was pierced at 14 months old. We were told that the blocked duct sometimes can resolve itself up to one year old, but after that it would need to be pierced. Meanwhile, we were told to use warm compresses and gently, yet firmly massage from the inner corner of her eye, down toward her nose. We did that daily as part of her regular cleaning routine, but it didn't resolve. My pediatrician (Dr. Alan Lubin in S.Orange) recommended Dr. Rudolph Wagner, who is an excellent pediatric opthamologist. As petrified parents of our first child, we quietly checked him out and he is very highly regarded and has an excellent reputation. He has offices in Roseland (973) 228-3111 and Newark 973-972-2032. He performed the very simple procedure at the hospital without incident. The hardest part (for me) was watching our daughter be "put under" which is a little scary if you have never seen anyone put under before. I think we had some eye drops or ointment to use for a few days after the procedure. Shortly after the procedure, I had a reality check while explaining the "horrible ordeal" and how scary it was to my neighbor who empathised with me and explained their horrible ordeal when their little girl (then about 6 years old) had undergone open heart surgery as a baby to repair a hole in her heart that she was born with. I mention this to you to help put the blocked tear duct into perspective and hopefully to reassure you that it is a very minor issue that might resolve before 12 months, but that is relatively easy to have corrected after 12 months. In short, I highly recommend Dr. Wagner and would go to him without hesitation for any eye issues with either of my kids. Best wishes and I'm sure every thing will work out fine for your child!!! |

I second Dr. Bernstein. He is wonderful with kids and their parents. He did surgery on my now 3 year old daughter last fall and we see him every 3 moths. Dr. Bernstein was reccommended to me not only by our pediatrician, but a friend who is a pediatrician who brings her son to him |

Thanks everyone for your responses. Even as a first time mom--I'm not panicking--just getting my ducks in a row. Our ped has told us from the day she was born that it can resolve itself by 12 months...then at our 6 month appt, she told us 18 months. So, I'm just getting ready for a 2nd opinion in the next few months in the event it doesn't resolve itself. It seemed to have been quite irritated over the weekend--all red and puffy. She woke up with it much better but very teary this morning. I have a call into the Ped--but given their "generalist"-like training in these things--i just want to be a bit proactive. After checking with my insurance (United Healthcare) it seems that the only Ped Opthomologist that would be completely covered is Dr. Mark Steele in Westfield....anyone know him? |

A second for Dr. Wagner. He saw my daughter as a premie in the NICU and later for a follow-up at his office. He is kind, caring, and compassionate. He understands that doctor visits are often more scary for the parent than the child. He patiently answered all of my questions. I gladly recommend him without reservation. Good luck to you and your little one. |
