I am thoroughly impressed with the roofing workmen who worked nonstop on our house today and want to tip each of them. Is it customary to hand money to each person (there must be at least 10) or to give it all to the foreman to hand out (I'm afraid he might keep it for himself). Also, what would be an appropriate tip?

Thanks!

"Also, what would be an appropriate tip?"

Why do people feel they have to tip for every service they get? Unless they did something out of the ordinary from roof installing, let it go at that.

Wait until you have fully experienced the fruits of their labor before you let fly with the tips. A leaky roof after tipping will just rub salt into the wound.

The workers are likely earning minimum or less - they deserve tips -- they're risking their lives (sometimes) to repair your roof. They're working paycheck to paycheck and the money you give them directly means you spend less time fretting about whether the union is honest or not.

I figure in an extra thou in tips for big jobs - it doesn't hurt so bad if you factor it in the beginning.

A thousand dollars seems to be an awfully large tip, IMO.
