I need ideas, from guys, or women who've succeeded with this. Men are hard to shop for. He's not in to BBQs and has lots of tools...

This happened once before. Check the archives.

I think I suggested the magnifying glasses you buy at the pharmacy.

i got mine a red satin and lace bra and panty set - for me to wear!!!!

mine is heavily into books, software and table tennis. chess sets catch his eye, but he has no-one to play with. manicure and pedicure vouchers go well with him, as he has atrocious nails and never does his feet (breaks off his toe nails, which I hate!).

at the time of his 40th we were both unemployed so couldn't afford much - gave a book voucher. also i organised for most of his family to surprise-visit us for the weekend (they live in other States), and arranged for family matches at the table tennis stadium. then we just did family stuff all weekend, spontaneously - he misses the people and doesn't need things so it was a happier birthday for him and dead-easy for me as his mum, SIL and cousin are brilliant cooks so all I had to do was serve what they prepared!

I agonized over this one for a while just recently too. My hubby's 40th was this past February.

Ended up not getting him much in the way of a gift, but a bunch of celebrations.

We had dinner out together, which was nice, and pretty much our normal routine for birthdays.

I sent him a GIANT balloon bouquet at his office (with a few of those "40" ballons), which apparently REALLY made his day (the card said it was from our boys).

Then I had a nice little surprise party at home with immediate family and a few good, close friends. Got some really yummy munchies from New World Catering, booze and a chocolate, chocolate, chocolate birthday cake from Cait & Abby's. He was totally surprised and very, very happy.

All that pretty much blew the budget for the big Four Oh!

Good luck.

Does he spend a reasonable amount of time in the car? My wife bought me a Sirius satellite radio for my birthday last year, and has made my daily commute to Woodbridge so much more enjoyable!

Send him to Vegas with his buddies. He will adore you forever.

Not quite the same thing, but TS is impossible to buy for because she has very expensive taste.

For her 40th, we had a BBQ (which was not a surprise) and when she opened her gift from me, it was a vacation (which was a surprise).

We had decided to take the week of her B-day off and "just hang around", go to the movies, out for dinner, etc. Instead, I booked a trip to Disney (lots of fun without kids). The BBQ was Saturday and we flew to FL on Monday. It gave us Sunday to pack without me having to worry about doing it without her noticing. ("Honey, where are all my underwear?" "Um.... I threw them all out because I noticed they had holes?")

You could take him away for a weekend if the whole week is too much. Or give him a race car lesson. I don't know the details, but I've read something about those.

Thanks--been away from the forum a while.

Well, he does like me in lingeree...otherwise, he does not follow sports, doesn't drink, doesn't gamble, is not the best driver. He's an "old" punk rocker, loves music (listens religiously to WFMU, so Sirius is out), he likes to go places but has too much work to do to really get away, he reads occasionally, especially history books, trade books, architecture...

An I-pod or similar?
One of those in-car satellite map things? (can't remember what it's called)
Clothing?

I'll plan a BBQ (which he won't have to grill for), and the mega chocolate cake from Cait and Abbey's sounds good.

Since he loves his music, an iPod preloaded with his music collection would be great. You can get the thingy that allows it to work in the car so that he can play his tunes driving.

is he a WFMU member? If you sign him up for a membership, you probably can still get a bunch of the give-aways they had for the fund drive. Or, get him an iPod and see what podcast downloads there are on the FMU website that you can load it up with. And of course, wrap the iPod with lingerie.
