I seem to have a family of ferrets living under my porch. Are they wild around here or do you think someone's pet got loose? I figure I should call the animal control people or Mem. |

Laura, we could probably use them at Vinny's candle party tomorrow night. Why don't you all stop by around 8? |

How do you know they are ferrets? I always thought the natural habitat of the ferret were the plains regions? I have never seen one in the wild though. Sounds like someone's pet. |

are you sure these are ferrets and not a long tailed weasel (Mustela frenata)? ferrets are a member of the weasel family

Have to tell y'all, I spent over a minute and a half f2f with this one. I was about to do some rat bait under the porch because the husband kept on complaining about vermints. Then this cutie came crawiling up to me today when I was watering the plantings. Glad I didn't, but now what do I do? Definitely a ferret and really adorable. (googled some pics, really cute face, long bushy tail...) We were really close, but I didn't want to pick him up, because I didn't have my gloves on. I will post a picture when I can figure out how to do it. Any ideas? justmeconservationist |

Just read a big story in the New York Times yesterday (Science Times section) about wild ferrets. There are no wild ferrets in North America other than black-footed ferrets, which are EXTREMELY rare, as in, almost extinct (that was what the story was about). So you either have weasels or escaped domesticated ferrets. You might want to call Animal Control. |

"Domestic pet ferrets, Mustela furo (sometimes called Mustela putorius furo), are not wild animals. They have been domesticated for a very long time, perhaps two or three thousand years. They're not equipped to survive for very long on their own; escaped pets suffer from dehydration, starvation and exposure, and usually don't survive more than a few days unless someone takes them in. Unlike cats and dogs, ferrets aren't even large enough to push over garbage cans and scavenge." http://www.faqs.org/faqs/pets/ferret-faq/part1/section-17.html |

This little cutie is/was definitely someone's pet. We have left food and water by the porch for him and he comes out to eat it. Tonight I lied down next to the food dish and he kept on coming out and sniffed me then crawled on me before taking a bite of food before running back under the porch. I am sure that in the next 24 hours we will be able to pick him up and take him inside. I would love to try to find his owner if he is an escapee. Any ideas on who to contact? Also, I will try to post his pic tomorrow. AlleyG, are you sure you couldn't take him because he really is the sweetest thing. |

I saw a "lost ferret" sign on Plymouth or Madison Ave. Do you live near those streets? I'll check for the signs again today.

So, now the cutie is a squater in my house. He let me pick him up today and I brought him inside and put him in a pet carrier. He did spend an hour sleeping on one of my boys. We have fallen in love with him. Unfortunately, he got loose and now he is a free roaming ferret indahouse. Really want to find his family, but now my kids love him. What to do? PS. Still trying to figure out how to post the pics from my camera. |

Tom, did you find the poster about the ferret? I drove around and didn't see it. The little guy is quickly becoming a part of the family. I've checked the lost and founds, but no luck. Anybody else have an idea who I should call? |

No, the signs are gone. I can't guess why.
