Ok, HELP ME PLEASE. I just smacked my thumb, and I now have a large blood blister. Nothing broken as it was a skin pinch. The pain has stopped, the swelling has slowed, and I have the blister. What do I do? Nothing, or do I prick it with a pin and vent the blood or fluids? Thanx, George |

I would suggest leaving it - I was always told that puncturing it could leave it open to infection..Cover it with a dressing and tape/bandaid I feel for you, and can only imagine the colourful language spewing out of your mouth as you did this.... Ouch.... |

I always puncture and drain followed up with a little first aid cream, a band-aid and the promise to aim better in the future! |

I usually puncture, but I had one a couple weeks ago that I let heal on its own. Took a few days. If you puncture: Wash hands (duh). Swipe blister with alcohol. Sterilize needle. Puncture. Peroxide on drained blister. Antibiotic cream. Bandaid. |

and try not to get yourself in the eye with the fluid when you puncture the blister. |

Hank - why do you think that I went to the needle method? Squashing with the other thumb generates a much less controllable squirt effect. It also tears a hole, which can get infected more easily and take longer to heal. |

Whenever I do something like this: pinch, hammer, burn myself. I immediately take two alleve and ice it for twenty minutes. It totally stops the stuff that causes the swelling and pain and it's like it never happened. Don't pop the blister. J.B. |

puncture, drain, clean & bandage if you leave it, you have the chance of it popping (gross, messy, & can get infected.) if you do puncture it, you forget it's there & you can still use your hands normally & not sorry about infection b/c it's properly bandaged. |

...and most importantly, get someone to kiss it & make it all better. my child is literally convinced that until an injury is kissed, it's just not going to heal.

Including the PL that I received, that is 4 for the prick and 2 for do nothing, not counting the kiss. Humm. Wow, this thing is getting quite big. Larger than a nickle. |

I've just re-read your post - you smacked your thumb? Why? What did it do wrong? |

If it's growing, I'd prick; it will eventually break and drain on its own. It is likely to happen when you are in close proximity to some light colored fabric, which will probably piss off your wife. |

"Treatment Generally no treatment is necessary. The blister will be naturally reabsorbed over several days, eventually just leaving a scab and a little rough skin which will fall off. Puncturing blood blisters is not advised unless they are causing significant pain. Once punctured the blister becomes an open wound that requires infection management and bandaging." From answer.com; same exact advice found at a number of other online sources

Ok, I did not smack it. I was trying to cover up the actual event so I did not sound so stupid. I was using my sawzall and cutting a small piece of wood for a porch rail. As I cut thru, the running saw popped out of my hand. Rather than let it fall, I grabbed for it in the air. My hand griped the area where the blade chuck moves back and forth, my thumb slipped into the area and the chuck smashed-pinched the meat of my thumb more than a few times before I could let go. Yes, that was stupid. Dropping the saw would not have hurt the saw or the ground below. You would think that I would have learned as when I was a teenager I was making a chisel and took the red hot iron out of the forge to the anvil. When I smacked it with a hammer, the iron flipped up, and I caught it in my gloved hand rather than let it fall to the floor. Wow did that burn, red hot iron vs. leather glove, iron wins. Perhaps I will learn this time. Later, George |

Your lucky ya didn't grab the blade. You'd have more (or less) than a blister to worry about. I've never been bit by a sawzall, but I can imagine the damage it could do, especially the aggressive, rough cut blade. Brrrrrrr! |
