My lady frined has a Limoges (sp?) tea set that she wants to get appraised. She was told a while back that it was worth some money. Does anyone have any suggestions of where a good reliable place might be to have this appraised? I would appreciate any feedback I can get. Thanks in advance.

I would think Bee and Thistle in Maplewood village on Baker Street. They seem to specialize in tea sets.

Thanks Justme. I will have her give them a call and see if they do appraisals.

She can also get a general idea by looking at e-Bay for the exact same pattern and at www.Replacements.com to see what they are selling replacement pieces for.

The selling price at Replacements would not be what they'd buy it for, but you can get an idea of market value. Unfotunately/fortunately, the e-Bayization of antiques has driven market value down in some areas. I've found fine china to be one of them. Several mint, complete sets of my grandmother's are worth half of what they were 10 years ago.

Also, if she's having it appraised for insurance, she'll need an appraisal certificate.

That's a good idea, greene, I hadn't thought of that. I think she was looking to get a certificate, although not to get it insured. I think she wanted to have the documantation in case she wanted to sell it a few years down the road. I will have her check out ebay and the replacements site.

And if what she was told about the price is true, even if it is worth half of what it was 10 years ago, she could use the money to send me on a very nice vacation. Well, it doesn't have to be a vacation, she could use the money to buy me any one of several things.

Mayor, if she's not going to insure it, I wouldn't bother paying for an appraisal, which is how she'll get the certificate. The value when she sells it may be very different.

It will depend on what's popular, how much is available, etc. Like any other market value, supply/demand thing. It would be like saying "my house is currently worth $500k, so that's about what I can sell it for in 5 years".

greene, I think she is really just curious about how much it is currently worth. As of this moment she is not looking to sell it, but depending on her situation in the future that may change. She has never had it appraised, and the only knowledge she really has of its value was told to her by a family member years ago. (And if that value was correct then, she doesn't know. That might have been the value told years before that, or could have been a mistake.)
