Is there a map that outlines what neighborhoods are served by the various Mwood elementary schools? |

Not that I'm aware of. If you call the Board of Ed's main number (which I cannot find right now) and tell them your address, they will tell you which school you are zoned for. |

Try 973 762 5600 x 1830, which is the registrar's extension. Or if you post your general neighborhood, someone here can tell you what elementary school you are probably zoned for. Registration info: http://www.somsd.k12.nj.us/registration.htm NOT OFFICIAL COMMENT , RATHER BASED ON PERSONAL OBSERVATION-- but South Mountain's sending zone, is approximately, New England Road in Maplewood, north to the West Orange/South Orange border. The railroad tracks west to the South ORange/Maplewood/Millburn border. (except for the area north of SOMS east of Ridgewood Rd). There is also a section in the eastern part of South Orange -- which includes Arnold Terr; Milligan Place; Third/Fourth/First Streets ; Academy St in SO; Kilburn; Tichenor; Ward Place; parts of Valley St in SO; Lindsley; Wetmore; Fairview; Montague -- these are just based on the students live... |

I know I'm zoned for the Tuscan school, but I was just curious about others. Maybe it's easier if I ask directly. What about Clinton? Marshall? Many thanks. |

I believe that at least part of the border between Clinton and Tuscan is Oakland Road. And at least part of the border between Seth Boyden and Tuscan is Springfield Avenue, but most of the area below Springfield and west of Burnet (?) seems to be Tuscan now. I think that was the result of the redistricting that occurred with the establishment of the Demonstration School. Earlier it was only the area around Prospect Street and beyond that was zoned for Tuscan below Springfield Avenue. I'm also pretty sure that the railroad tracks form a good portion, if not all, of the border between Tuscan and Jefferson. All of this is purely based on knowing people in various neighborhoods and which schools their children attend(ed) though, so take it with that level of authority. That's about all I can help with. Maybe some Marshall/Clinton/South Mountain folks can chime in on their boundaries, which are a mystery to me. |

Your simple question has a far from simple answer. The borders of our elementary school catchment areas are likely to vary somewhat based on the distribution of school aged children in each of the current elementary school "dstricts", the capacity of each school and the number of children from each "district" electing to attend the demonstration school or requesting to attend a school outside of their assigned elementary school "district". EEOC guidelines are also apt to play a part in deciding which blocks are zoned for which elementary school. To make things even more confusing, there are some schools such as Marshal and Jefferson which are paired to maintain better EEOC parity. At one time, there was a plan to pair all of the elementary schools because most of our schools (Tuscan was the only exception) were outside the then present EEOC guidelines but the demonstation school concept eliminated the need for that. Hope this helps. Perhaps if you were to post the reason for your question, we could be more helpful. |

My suggestion is for you to tour each school and make your own evaluation. We are in the Clinton schoold district, and I have heard both wonderful and horrible things about the school. It can be hard to listen to everyone's opinion, it is something IMO you have to "feel" and deduce for yourself if it is the right school for your child or not. |

I have a child at Marshall and could not tell you what the exact boundaries are. There is a region in SO that includes some of the area between Valley/Scotland all the way to the Newark boarder and then there are parts of Maplewood from Ridgewood to the train tracks but some streets above Ridgewood are also at Marshall while some are S. Mountain. |

Thanks everyone. A very simple reason for asking that really has no hidden agenda at all: I was curiously looking at real estate listings in the area, and noticed that many had notations as to what elementary school district they were in. Just trying to figure out how my house stacks up against those for sale. Thanks again. |
