My daughter was driving her car on 78 tonight -- car stalls, check engine light comes on.

Made it into Maplewood -- she was worried so parked, and I went to get her.

I drove it home -- it seems to me a fuel system problem (sometimes hesitates badly from start, stumbles at idle) -- but otherwise ok.

She has 2 days off work -- usually I'd take it to Ridge Tire in the am, but I'm thinking they'll be backed up.

Any other local recommendations?

THANKS -- Pete

Pete,

We've had a lot of rain and that can cause havok with some cars, but you won't know if this is your problem until the area dries out. Since rain is in the forecast for tomorow, this doesn't help much. I owned a car a log time ago that hated really wet weather.

I've heard rave reviews about a young guy at the Delta on Burnett Avenue, across from the Quick Check (I think that is in Union). Haven't used him myself, but I plan to give him a try the next time I need a mechanic.

Thanks all -- got the car into Ridge this morning -- and they've already called with a resonable diagnosis. Car will be fixed today!

Pete, so what was the diagnosis? Us amateur mechanics want to know. :-)

My guess ia electrical, maybe spark plug wires?

I drove the car for a few miles around SO last night. All in all pretty good -- then on occasion it would hesitate badly and stumble on acceleration. Sometimes the check engine light would come on.

Coincidentally (I think not!) she got a full tank of gas yesterday morning. She said it was fine for a short while after getting gas, then started having the problem.

Ridge is changing the fuel filter and cleaning the throttle body. I guess they didn't pull any codes from the CEL - which is a good thing. I'm hoping the problem is solved and they don't need to drop the gas tank or do more cleaning out of the fuel system.

I have had the same problem. It came from the fuel. Sometimes, believe it or not, the gas station pumps water with the fuel. Additive (isopropyl alcohol) from the parts store will clear this up soon and be very inexpensive. Not sure that cleaning the throttle body was called for.

PS: If you tell me where the gas came from, I will confirm if it is the same gas station. Granted this happened about three years ago.

To complete this thread, the work above didn't take care of the problem. It went back, needed a "mass airflow sensor". From what I read on the internet -- not too uncommon a problem.
