A group of us have a big project at work to create a mock trade show booth. We are given about a ten by ten space, electricity and a table. Our theme is Breaking Down Cultural Barriers. Anyone have any ideas how to be creative on the cheap to get people to walk over and say wow? (one team sent out invites to all the staff) So far, we have a slide show as our background, and are now stuck... |

It's not very creative, but Marketing Pros all know that you have to have a freebie gimic. I've seen everything from bowls of candy to a golf simulator. Popcorn machine, cappucino machine, ice cream bars. Personalized luggage tags on people's business cards. Why not have inexpensive give-aways dealing with the different cultures? Candies, snacks, etc. from each place? |

Pop corn machine! We did this at a show and got overwhelmed with people. They rent for about $80, the pop corn is $10. Then get bags printed up with the Logo or Message. Next thing you know everyone at the show is walking around advertising your booth.

Don't ask me about my popcorn machine story...... Needless to say, I never eat popcorn out of machines or at the movies anymore. |

Oh, invites are a must. Before conferences, I get a zillion post cards from companies who will have displays. Stop by our booth so we can introduce you to the new X7000 system! Drop in your business card to win a raffle for an iPod. Have a raffle or drawing for something cool like a mini iPod. Or a $100 Amex gift certificate (people always love those). Advertise it on your invite and make sure that you have them fill out business & contact info on the raffle form. This is for your mock future contact list. I assume you are being graded or judged on this somehow?} |

A friend rented a popcorn machine for his booth at the Javitz a couple years ago. When they came in the morning of Day 2, the booth next to them found that the tops of all the wrapped chocolate mints they'd had on a tray were gone. Just the tops. So, they start talking amongst the other booth holders, security guards, etc. Turns out that it's not so uncommon that large convention venues have rats in residence. Who like to come out at night and feast on the trade show offerings. My friend freaked and dug around in his popcorn machine. He didn't recall ordering popcorn with raisins, but there they were at the bottom. I think about that every time I see one of those things in a bar, theatre or convention. Because I don't think that they get emptied out and thoroughly cleaned each night. Sorry. But, hey, think of it this way: movie popcorn is really fattening and if you are grossed out, I just saved you 1000 calories. |

Best that your attraction tie-in to your content. Idea: Create an arcade-type attraction. You know the midway game where you have to throw a ball to break plates or knock over a clown head? Create something similar. Use cheap large cardboard or plastic blocks to create a fun representation of a cultural "barrier." Get some balls, label each ball with a word that corresponds to one of the techniques you're promoting (i.e. "communication," "understanding," etc). To play, someone just needs to give you their card or contact info (good way to build list) and there could be a token prize for knocking the barrier down completely. Good luck.

How about some photos juxtaposed on a large background to illustrate how one culture is really just as "odd" as another. For example, you could blow up photographs and crop to show say... an earring in an ear vs. a big plate in a lip; a woman's eyes in a burka vs. a Western bride's eyes behind her white veil; a Western woman "baking" her hair under a dryer vs. ???. Sort of a view of what our cultural differences would look like to an alien. |

This is a pretty dumb idea, but I have seen it in operation. To promote a global curriculum, an office on our campus had a Global Hot Dog day. Free hot dogs, with various "global" toppings - e.g. chutney, peanut butter (really), kim chee, Russian mustard, and I really don't remember what all. It was pretty silly but very popular. To be truly global (or inter-cultural) you'd need to make sure your dogs meet various dietary requirements - e.g. veggie dogs available. At the trade shows I attend, food gets a lot of attention. Some of the vendors set up food during specified cocktail-hour periods of the event - that's when you'd do this. Not necessarily during the regular trade-show hours. I like the suggestion above about the arcade game and breaking down the cultural barriers, too. |
