No they don't take car batteries. But Essex County does. This is from Eric Burbank on another thread:

"Essex County is holding it's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday May 6, 2006. You can pick up a flyer at any municipal building."

and

"Hazardous waste included on this day are items such as: Pesticides and Herbicides, Paint thinners and solvents, Oil based paints and stains, chemistry sets, propane tanks, pool chemicals, Automotive fluids such as antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluid. Darkroom photographic chemicals, Household batteries, Fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, Mercury and Mercury containing products, Gasoline, Kerosene, Household cleaning fluids, Car batteries, Fire extinguishers, Driveway sealers, aerosol spray cans."

Only books that have previously been burned by conservative factions; otherwise, the books cannot be classified as hazardous waste.

The Maplewood Recycling Center takes car batteries, household batteries, and motor oil. If that is all you have then you don't have to go to the county. We also take books as long as the hardcover is torn off.

Thanks Eric. That's good to know. Sorry about leaving that fact out folks. I just knew that the batteries wouldn't be picked up during bulk pick-up, right?
