So today's my birthday :-) and for once we have managed to find a sitter on the actual day so we can go out and celebrate. It doesn't need to be super fancy but I would like to try a place I haven't been to before. Since we moved from Brooklyn four years ago, I've been to Verjus and the fancy French place on Maplewood Ave. which now has a new name, but that's about it. What about the new-ish resaturant is South Orange (Voro?). I'd also be open to a good Asian place in Montclair (Thai maybe) but that's about as far as we want to drive. Thanks!

If you are going to Montclair, the Diva Lounge is GORGEOUS and the food is good. Close by on Bloomfield ave is Indigo Smoke which is Barbecue in beautiful surroundings.

Happy Birthday!

For local, I'd suggestTerra (fka American Fare)? Cafe Arugula on SO Ave is good, too.

There is a fabulous Thai place in Montclair on Bloomfield whose name escapes me. I went there last year for my birthday

Khun Thai on Millburn Ave (in Millburn or SH)

Basilico on Millburn Ave

In Montclair - we just went to Richie Cecere's (sp?) near the Walnut St. Train Station (next to Trumpets Jazz Club) and it was FABULOUS!!!! We never even knew it was there. Incredible food, excellent wait staff and great decor. I think the official address puts it on "Erie Street".

Happy Birthday!

Antonella's really is fabulous, as is Terra. Neither of them are really as fancy as Voro or Lorenas. Voro is fun but very LOUD. For our last anniversary we went to Seranade in Chatham, based on a MOL rec, and it was utterly perfect.

Scalini Fedeli in Chatham, across Main Street from Serenade, is also very nice. Same caliber restaurant (very upscale) is Il Mondo Vecchio in Madison. Garlic Rose in Madison is also very good, and is more casual. Same for Soho 33, also in Madison (15 minute drive). All but Scalini and Serenade are BYO.

Khun Thai (suggested above) is a beautiful restaurant with decent food, but it is outrageously overpriced for what you get. For Thai, I prefer Morris Thai in Union, though the setting is not upscale, so that may not be what you want for a birthday.

I heard Restaurant Bernadette (formerly Jocelyne's) is great, but sadly, not open today.

Happy Birthday! enjoy!

Lorena's (fka Jocylene's) is amazing; the food is even better than Jocelyne's was. Terra is nice; the menu isn't exotic, tho, if that's what you are looking for. Fabu desserts. Antonella's is amazing, too. If you go to Antonella's, walk across the street to Arugula for dessert & coffee (shhhh - don't tell Antonella or Carlo that I said that).
