Anyone recognize this number? They keep calling me and hanging up before I can even answer and it is sooo annoying. |

Go to verizon.com and do a reverse look up. Or, call them! |

I call and it just rings and rings. I called directory assistance and they said they can only tell me it is in maplewood. Verizon doesn't come up with anything - is there another carrier in our area? |

Call the phone company and see if you can block the number. It should be pretty simple. |

The phone number "(973) 762-2298" is based in South Orange, NJ and the registered carrier is Verizon New Jersey, Inc. However, due to number portability, some numbers have been transferred to a new service provider other than the registered carrier.

This may no longer be true, but at one time all 76 numbers were registered as "South Orange" (including those in Maplewood, which are many, including mine.) In fact, going way back when we had letters rather than numbers at the beginning of phone exchanges, it was SO rather than 76 - check your phone keys to see this. My mother came to visit me once when I first moved here and was trying to call an old friend who lived in the area. She kept dialing 506-xxxx and getting a wrong number. We finally figured out that she had the phone number written down as SO-6-xxxx. |

Actually - to split hairs, Sac, 761, 762, and 763 were the SO/Mplwd exchanges. But otherwise, you are correct. |

Okay everyone - ashamed to admit it - but it was my doorbell calling me. we have a telephone entry system where when someone rings the bell - it rings your phone. Of course I only use a cell phone and when I moved in they could only do landlines so I never used this feature. Well - turns out now they do use cell phones and the super programmed mine in - i just didn't realize it. Explains the hang ups and the lack of voicemails! |

TK South Orange I applaud your honesty! You may want to email Dave about deleting this thread. Not sure I'd want people calling my garage.

TK had one of those DAH! moments I guess. Why would anyone want their doorbell to ring their cell phone? I admit to being a low tech kinda guy, but this seems to be something that is being done solely because it can be done. If you are so far away that you can't hear the doorbell, you will never make it home before the doorbell ringer gives up and leaves.

LOL - Front door doesn't take incoming calls - ah - see - our buliding is older. So instead of wiring all the apartments w/ doorbells to the front of the building - they put in a phone system instead. So when someone comes and ring your bell - it rings your phone - but it is the same telephone number for the whole building. So if someone is at the front of the building - that is the only way to "ring" you to tell you they are there. Unless they are walking around in the building -then there is a doorbell hooked up to your front door that you can ring. So alas, none can reach me by calling my front door - you have to be standing there pushing the button. I guess whoever was looking for me went away - maybe some packages I didn't get (or that got stolen, I will never know) |
