I'm looking to do some kind of volunteer work for 1 day a week, anybody got any suggestions?

Has anyone got any experience in this area?

I was thinking of inquiring at Overlook hospital.. anyone ever worked there as a volunteer?

I volunteer in 2 places. One is the Millburn Red Cross. I am a volunteer driver.
If you're available say yes..if not say no. I also volunteer at EIES of NJ. A radio reader service for the blind and disabled. We read newspapers and other printed matter in a station which is broadcast to special radio receivers. If interested in either let me know, I'll tell you who to call.

I could use some volunteer help with the Memorial Day Parade. See my parade blog for a wish list of things volunteers can do. This is a once a year event rather than on going however and may not be what you are looking for. Please send me a PL if you are interested.

If you can drive, I would recommend volunteering for any service (often local Red Cross)that provides rides to Overlook for chemotherapy and other recurrent therapies that patients need. When my husband needed rides last summer, I could find nothing even remotely affordable, and no volunteer org serviced Maplewood in this regard. Not cancercare, nothing.

As it happens, the "Maplewood Irregulars" (a collection of friends I came to know through MOL) helped us out and I am forever grateful. But, it would be nice if such rides were available to Maplewoodians needing them. Honestly, taxi and medical transport services want in the range of $40 one way, and many patients need to go there 3 days in a row! That's $240 for just one round!!! Insurance does not cover!!!!

What kind of causes do you prefer? What kinds of activity do you want to do?

There are so many options that it may make sense to give us more information about what kind of volunteering would be most meaningful to you

The Jersey Animal Coalition needs dog walkers- you can walk dogs one day a week, it would be a great help. Visit www.jaconline.org for more info.

Try "New Eyes for the Needy" on Milburn Ave.

Great Charity - the number of lives that they positively impact from their small building is amazing!

Thanks for all the ideas folks.. still deciding which kind of work I'd enjoy best. Makes it tough that I only have one day a week, if I had more days I'd pick a few things!! Anyway keep the suggestions coming...

The Maplewood First Aid Squad recently advertised for volunteers on MOL. Try the search feature (it was only a couple of weeks ago at most) for the details and contact info. Their post said that they would even provide training.
