I'm just about to close on a house in the neighborhood and all these posts on carpenter bees or squirrels in your dresser or rats in the basement are TERRIFYING ME!!! I've owned a home before out west but didn't have to worry about much more than the occasional lizard or waterbug. We had a bird caught in our shed once and he pooped all over our stuff. But that was about it.

Anyway, how common IS this? Wildlife getting caught inside your home? Rats coming up from the toilets? Why are there so many stories like these on MOL? Is it the proximity to the reservation? Are there certain parts of town that have it worse than others?

Not very common at all. Think about the entire population of M/SO, then think about the small minority of folks that post here.

We have all manner of wildlife, but none have ever intruded in to our house, other than your random fly. I've lived here almost 8 years, and have never seen a rat.

Relax. Everything's going to be fine.

It's not that bad at all. If you happen to have an issue, remediation is usually pretty easy.

I can't guarantee that you won't have such problems, but I can say that if it happens, you'll get through it and be stronger from the experience. People leave Maplewood for many reasons, but I've never heard of anyone leaving because of excessive wildlife.
