So ... the printer isn't hooked up and I get to an Internet site that "awards" me a coupon (and I can't come back to it later), so I select print and then take the option to Print to a file. This creates a .prn file on my hard drive.

Fast forward a day and the printer is connected. How do I print this file? Since it is created by the Windows Print dialog (apparently), it seems that there should be some mechanism in Windows to allow me to print it later, but I can't find one. I can't open the file in any of my familiar programs.

It may or may not come out the way you want, but you should be able print the file easily. Open it up in Windows Explorer (or open My Computer and find it), right-click and I bet there's a Print option.

1. Can you view the file and they copy the text to another program which your computer can read and then print?

2. Can you rename the file as .doc or .wpd for example and then print it?

I did the right-click thing and tried opening with everything on this computer ... either gibberish or (in the case of Internet Explorer) nothing happened. And there was no print option on the right click menu, unfortunately.

It just seems like if Windows creates it, there ought to be a way to print it ... with something built in to Windows. Sigh!

You should download and install CutePDF, a free application that installs like a printer, but allows you to save your document as a .pdf.

It's free at:
http://www.cutepdf.com/

Just select it as your printer when you want to print something, it will ask you where to save the .pdf, and you're done.

Print the .pdf file later, at your convenience.

(Or, buy a Mac, that's a built-in function.)

Try opening the folder containing the file in one window and Printers and Faxes in the other (Start->Printers and Faxes) and drag the file to the printer icon.
