I know dogs need exercise and I do walk my dog. BUT, on many cold mornings I just let her run out to squirt before her breakfast. As a consequence the grass outside my back door is dead. So, I'm goint to make a little pee area for her. I bought some shade loving plants to border it and I'm planning on filling it with mulch. Has anyone done this? Will the mulch smell like dog pee? Do I need to create an under layer of stones for drainage? Will the dog start peeing on a different area as soon as I'm done making this? Oh, and will this add to the value of my property and increase my taxes? J.B.

JB, We did the exact same thing you're talking about, but we used tiny pebbles instead of mulch. We lined the ground with landscape fabric and placed the pebbles on top of it. The pebbles are easy maintenance since you can hose them down. It works great. |

Tom, you smarty pants, is your assumption about females because they always pee in the same place, whereas males spread their scent? I made the pee garden, used mulch though, sorry CFA, I had already bought it when I read your post about gravel. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out. CFA, also, when I was a kid, we had a female who didn't squat, she lifted her leg, then she lifted her other leg and literally walked on her front paws when she peed! People who were visiting always wanted to come along when we walked her just to see it. J.B. |

I have the same issue. We just spent weeks planting an entirely new lawn in the backyard, and I am reluctant to let my dog out back to pee. I want to train him to go out the front door and find a small gravelly spot to use. He is male, but also squats most of the time. So I'll be looking into this issue. BTW, while at Petco this weekend, I saw a product I was tempted to buy that supposedly trains your dog to pee in the same spot all the time by supposedly luring him/her with certain pheromones. It was a yellow stake you hammer into the ground, and the dog is supposed to want to pee on it. It's about $20, if memory serves me correctly, so I was reluctant to buy it until I figure out if my dog can be trained without it. He's not the brightest bulb in the box, however, so I may resort to it yet. |

My male dog will pee on any vertical object he can find. Which means that almost any child's toy, mower, sprinkler, lawn chair, etc. left in the yard is a target. In addition, neither he nor the female will pee on a non-grass surface. Our back yard is a riot. Huge patches of dead earth and then clumps of high, beautiful grass where the dogs pee. Apparently the dogs emit a very high quality pee as my grass never turns yellow, and instead grows like a weed where the dogs eliminate. But hey it is better than having to dig tunnles for them in the snow, right? Zoesky if you can figure out how to have a "pee zone" let me know. I was never able to do it. A "poop zone" would be great as well so pooper scooping would be a breeze. |

Wendyn, well, I'm not the dog trainer in our household. But Mr Zoesky1 has taken it on himself to drum some new tricks into this old dog's head (well, middle-aged dog...he's 7). While we were reseeding the backyard, Mr Z successfully retaught our dog, Culver, to poop and pee in the front, more or less in the same spot. The task is now to move that spot to where there is gravel or pee-absorbing product. Mr Z also taught Culver to never pee on the deck. Culver wouldn't do it a lot, but if it were raining or snowy, he'd get lazy. Now he knows better. So anyway, I will be working on the pee zone. |

Can I rent Mr Z? We want to re-grade and re-seed the back yard but I am hesitant to do it because of the dogs. If I walk them they are fine, but I can't walk them every time they need to go out (especially at 5 am). Right now I am more actually concerned about a poop-eating issue. Blech. At least it is the dogs and not the kids, right? Never a dull day... |

I won't lie to you--it's been really challenging having him go out into the front yard all the time, especially because we currently have no front door access due to some renovations on the front of the house! So we've been forced to take him in and out of a side door that leads into the laundry room. Yet this is working out to be a potentially good pee spot, since it's paved, more or less, with asphalt. The only problem is, there is some run-off into my neighbors' yard. I doubt they will appreciate a dog pee odor. On the other hand, I could hose it down periodically. I don't know. We need to find a place for the gravel/pee absorber. I wish dogs could use litter boxes (although I wouldn't want to scoop those bad boys)! |
