If they live close, a day with you is a great gift for them (and their parents!)

Otherwise books, Duplos and outside toys (bubble machines, water toys) are great.

Books are always appreciated, with summer coming up, new water toys are a great idea as well.

I agree with the day-with-you sentiment. I always try to have my (childless) siblings take my kids to the movies/play/museum & lunch out instead of a gift. Even a sleepover, rent a video, make popcorn, etc. It doesn't have to cost a lot.

If that doesn't float your boat, perhaps a gift cert. to a local (to them) kids store or movie tickets/ice cream. Or kids cd's/dvds. My favorites are things that don't take up a lot of space and that can be shared by all the kids.

Outdoor games/toys are nice too. Swingball is great for 2 kids to share, they have it at www.hearthsong.com. Or a bocce set. We enjoy playing that with our kids.

Toys R Us has big boxes of colorful wooden block that kids love. Also, something like lincoln logs are old school and foster creativity. Toys R Us also has Imaginarium dress up clothes that are great. You can get a doctor, train conductor, vet, fireman, policeman etc. They are excellent sets. 3 year olds are just starting to get into dress-up - even boys.

I always vote for books. You can never have too many of them.

Thomas the Tank Engine is a big favorite with three-year-old boys!

I love the book idea too. I'd also suggest stopping by Wooden U Know on Springfield Ave. They have toys that require a child's imagination - no batteries required.

My daughter got this gears set a few months back that was really cool. It's these plastic colored gears you interconnect & get them to turn.

My 3 yo boy is in love with Imaginext dinosaurs. There are about 15 different ones. Just don't buy them the Imaginext T-Rex Mountain. It's the worst toy I've ever had in my possession. But the rest are good.

I've learned this: You can always give a toy to kids who have everything as long as you provide a gift receipt. That way they can return the gift if they don't like it or have it already for something else. I used to want to pick out the PERFECT gift for everyone, but have since loosened my expectations.

Another good 3 year old gift: the Cranium set of games for that age, particularly Cariboo. Other good board games: Candy Land, Hi Ho Cherry O.

I'll second the Wooden-You-Know recommendation. Lots of good stuff.

Wooden You Know is fabulous. Last time I was in there I had a hard time leaving. So many great things everywhere you look. They have some nice books, and music as well, so you could get a little toy and a book. AND they will gift wrap it for you!

I 2nd Wooden You Know. If you just go in there and ask them (probably Matt) a gift for a 3 yr old for $x price, they will explain to you their various options. Plus, you'd be supporting a local business.

Another recommendation for Wooden You Know! They are customer service oriented to the extreme and have complimentary gift wrapping and an excellent selection of classic and new high-quality and very safe toys!

They also have a small selection of dress-up clothes for boys and girls and music CD's and some of the greatest birthday "cards" I've ever seen. These "cards" are actually activity books that are geared to the level of the age of the child and are very reasonable (just a tad more than a typical Hallmark type card.)

They are well-worth the trip to 1881 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood!

How about taking them to Build-A-Bear? Or, if they don't live nearby, they sell gift certificates. Young kids seems to love that place
