Unfortunately, even service from good vendors can go down hill. My once-reliable mechanic, whom shall remain nameless, though it's a place that I and many other MOLers have recommended in the past, is just not doing as good of a job anymore. Last couple of times I let it slide, but this last one was a doozy. I brought the car in for a repair that cost $600, a week later, had the same problem, that now "supposedly" is a completely different problem that will cost $900. I don't buy it, so it's the end of the line for this place. Oddly enough, I feel really down about losing a good resource.

Please , tell me some of your good experiences with local mechanics. I'm about to buy a new car so I'm going to need someone reliable, trustworthy, and fairly priced for the long haul.

For what kind of car? That can make a difference.

Well, right now I have an older Buick LeSabre, and we're considering a Subaru for the next one, but we haven't totally nailed it down yet.

What are the two separate problems your mechanic claims you have/had?

First it was the mass air converter. A week later, with the exact same symptoms, I'm being told that the 2nd gear is shot. I suspected it was the transmission to begin with, and suggested as much to the mechanic, but he insisted that wasn't it. I would be OK with paying $900 to have it fixed right the first time. But $900 on top of $600 stings a bit much, especially when we'll soon be buying a new car, and this will just be the 2nd car.
