FYI - the Eileen Fisher outlet is in Seacaucus.

Onehanesplace.com is excellent for bras, sweats, etc.

Can I offer some advice for ladies of all ages and sizes? Wrap dresses & skirts, whether they are by my fav Diane von Furstenberg, or by another designer, are always a classic on any shape. They come long or mid-length. You can dress them up with heels or down with flip flops and sneakers. They are my ultimate stand-by. DVF's are usually silk, but some I have are fabulous jersey cotton. Washes well in cold water and Woolite and easy to pack and fold. They are great for that last minute "little black dress" or going off to work. If you've had a big meal, hey, don't tie it too tightly on the side! They are the best creation since...SPANX! I'm sure you all know about this little trick, right?

Nordstrom's is my favorite store especially because: ALTERATIONS ARE FREE! When you purchase full price merchandise all alterations are free. That is huge for me. Very few clothes fit well off the rack and it really helps to know that you can have your clothes customized at no extra cost. I try to spend most of my dollars at Nordstrom because I appreciate their customer service, clean, well-merchandised stores. I also like Bloomingdales at Bridgewater Commons - much more open and airy than the one in MaSH.

I find the fewer clothes I own the better - everything in my closet I love, if it sits there for a year - out it goes.

For coats - I buy the absolute best I can afford in Feb. when they sell for cost. Max Mara is generous with fabric, drapes well and even after 10 years I get compliments from strangers. I bought a full-length cashmere coat in 1995 that still isn't showing it's age - best $700 I ever spent.

Jeans, shorts, and knock-around t-shirts I get at thrift stores or Teenage Wasteland.

I buy good white cotton T's from Petit Bataeu - $40 a pop but you can layer, they always fit right and after a year of washing they don't lose their shape.

No one has recommended Anthropology! Cool clothes that anyone can wear - no matter your figure or age. Expensive, but they always have a good sale rack/room.

I used to like the Gap, but after a season of washing they just pull and have threads hanging all over, you get better clothes at Teenage Wasteland for half the price.

Quite frankly, though the clothes at Anthropologie are cute and trendy, they are also cheaply made and overpriced. Not a good combination.

I don't usually recommend Macy's, but sometimes they have great sales (especially on decent suits). They absolutely stink for customer service, though. Just try to find a cash register wth a person behind it!!!

Kibbegirl raised an excellent point with the wrap dresses/skirts. I have a fantastic silk wrap skirt (Eileen Fisher, btw) that goes absolutely anywhere, and always looks great.

I have had two DVF wrap dresses and I have the web site bookmarked as a favorite....I will always try to have one in my closet, they give me the illusion of having a bust and hips!

Do you have another dress that has stood the test of time?

I have a navy blue, lace overlay, short sleeve, full twirly skirt dress with a definate waistline. I adore it so much I want to have a copy made. I bought it in 1985 and I still love, love it. I pop on some high heels, sheer stockings and a string of pearls and I am off to dance the night away!

My theory is splurge for the pieces that do it all - hide it, cover it, expose it when appropriate.

Agnes B. Eileen Fisher (sp) and a handful of brands fit that bill.

You can't go wrong with white T's and pants that hang well - I don't care if you're size 2 or 14, a little extra on the fabric and cut will transform a tired Mom into a stylish person.

The most "aging" fashion statement a woman can make IMO is a "designer" handbag.

The fact that you are able to still fit in anything you bought from 1985 sickens me.

I'd be lucky to get my calf in anything pre-1997 (the last year before I was pregnant)!

I have tried on a bunch of wrap dresses but my damn torso is too long.

I do much better with separates. I love pant suits, dressed up or down. BUT, this thread is more about casual-wear.

I too love Annie Sez but you really have to search and try a million things on. For someone who hates shopping, Me& is probably better off finding a brand that suits her and sticking with it.

That's funny. I've been trying to think of dresses in my closet but really only have a few. In the early -mid 90's I had all my dresses and skirts cut to obscenely short lengths, and those really short minis look kind of dated now.

I had a lot of mini's that were totally cool a decade ago (1996) seems like yesterday, but fashion-wise it's the dark ages.

Long skirts are current - minis are out unless you're 16 and can carry off a flip-skirt.

Ladies, don't forget to pick up a box of Spanx. Spanx are kind of like panty hose, but with more "suck in-ability". I wore them religiously after giving birth to our second son. God, did they save the day! When you're losing the baby weight at a good pace, but you're still not quite there yet to zip up -- you know what I'm saying :-) I've kept them in my drawer (4.5 years now -- so worth the money!) and even loaned them out. They come in a full lenghty panty hose or knee length biker style shorts. They smooth out, tuck in and make you feel really great. I was in Tarjay recently and I saw their brand product which looked very similar to Spanx but for much less money. Give either brand a try -- you'll be very pleased.

Insofar as long skirts vs. short skirts, I don't really think it's an age issue as much as a style issue. You have to know what your body type can pull off -- period. I've seen women around here well in their 50's with fabulous legs, manicured toes and rocking mid-length skirts. They look great in them! Your clothing is about your spirit -- how you feel about you. If you're hip (and many of us are!) and you carry yourself well, I think you can wear damn near anything. Accessories are our friends. If you don't look well in some of the stuff InStyle is showing for the spring/summer, hip your outfits up with cool shoes, or beautiful earrings or a cool necklace. Annie Sez in Millburn has really great "fun" jewelry. If you're comfy with Lands End khaki's, dress that up with a billowly white blouse with a cool cotton tank under it and a funky necklace. WOW! Now that's hot! :-)

Has anyone tried Century 21 in Morristown? The best one is in NYC, but this one isn't bad either. Here is their link:

L&T sales, Landsend.com (I watch the "on the counter" every Sat a.m for super deals, like the $5.00 skirt I bought a couple of weeks ago), Old Navy. When I have the energy, and a few bucks, Talbot's sales. Being tall, a little older and not skinny I find that clothes more towards the preppy zone fit best, and often need no alterations.

I'm with cynicalgirl. I'm also tall (though not as tall as she is), older and not skinny. Talbot's reliably fits me but is expensive - I use more for work clothes, esp. suit-meeting days. I don't like their casual clothes which are too preppy/golfy for my taste. I also recently bought a little Coldwater Creek stuff for non-suit-meeting days at work. It was better "in person" than I really expected, fit well, and I think that the long flowy styles suit taller not-thin women.

My casual or mid-range clothes are a disaster. I've been reading this thread with a great deal of interest. I've had a hard time finding casual trousers that are attractive, fit over the gut & butt but don't gap at the waist, and are NOT cropped (which look really bad on me - being tallish with thick ankles is a bad combination). I usually end up with the same tired old jeans I've always worn, and they're not always appropriate.

I like to bring my 8-yo kid shopping with me as she has better taste than I do, She likes picking out suits & work clothes for me and does a really awesome job - I always get compliments on the outfits she picks out. (recessive gene I guess.) Unfortunately, she has no interest in helping me find casual clothes.

I also forgot to mention smartbargains.com and also on occasions you will find steals on classiccloseouts.com. I got a Ralph Lauren summer dress last year for $14 on SM... Classic closeouts do have some naff stuff, but you can also get some real good (name brand too) bargains. Check out online for coupon/discount codes and even when you use those if your total comes to over $50 after coupon code, you also get free shipping.
