JuJu Petals wrote a funny response about Jury Duty parking. It made me think of another question: what should I bring to Jury Duty? Should I bring my own lunch? Plenty of magazines, etc.?

Lots of magazines or a book you've been putting off reading due to lack of time - time is all you have at jury duty (unless selected for a case). You get a break for lunch and the courtroom has a caf. My last duty was during my first pregnancy - needless to say, I got through all of "What to expect when your expecting."

Bring Reading material, but the TV will be blasting all day long, and you'll get sucked in, like everyone else, into watching back to back episodes of shows like "Who's the Boss?" You will try to resist getting sucked in, but you will eventually cave and then be disappointed when your name is called and you'll have to leave mid-episode.

Bring lots of reading (but nothing that requires serious concentration). Bring a laptop if you have one -- if you don't have work to do, at least you can play solitaire.... If you have a CD Player/MP3 player, bring that to tune out the people you don't want to talk to.

They have a cafeteria onsite that you can go to - it has the basics and you can sit in there for a change of scenary while you eat. Bring change and/or dollar bills for the vending machines - I think they had a few for soda/snacks.

The Newark court house is a real pit -- I've been on jury duty in Somerset and Mercer counties -- and the "waiting" rooms for jurors, etc are far far nicer and reasonable to read, do some work, etc.

There is a lousy little cafeteria in the adjacent building, some street vendors -- so you can get something to eat.

But no tables or anything like it to work at, etc.

/p

Last time I was in Newark there was an area with tables for the jurors to do work. Bring snacks, and lots and lots of reading.

There are tables outside of the main jury area, which are conveniently located away from the TV.

Last time I was there the whole jury area had been upgraded from folding chairs to one room of sofas and another with tables for laptops or whatever.

AND a friend was also there AND they gave us a 2-hour lunch break AND when we came back they said no need to come in tomorrow.

Wishing you an equally pleasant experience.
