I hope they come here to SOMA, of course, but I am curious about Madison, too. Anyone know the place? |

Very homogeneous. Homes are very expensive. Taxes are lower. |

Homes are nice, there really isn't a "bad" area of town, just some places that have older homes. Also, the downtown is great. There are lots of restaurants and different kinds of shops. Nice area. Also, there is a bowling alley, which is always nice to have in town. |

We lived in Madison just prior to moving to Maplewood. Loved most about the town...very easy to walk to shops- great library- and decent parks. Also really good schools. Overall we loved living in town...just a little too long of a train ride for my husband (missed seeing our son most nights) and the housing market is a little crazy. Let me know if you have any questions...I'd be glad to help! |

When I go there, the people don't seem quite as friendly. Case in point: the guy at the ice cream parlor gave me for ordering my daughter a "kid's" scoop. "It's only for five and under," he said. She's five, and tall. That said, I can recommend a good hairdresser (kevin, at salvator manardi) who's from "SOMA". |

Madison is indeed a quaint town. Was thinking of living there before choosing SO instead. Reasons were better commutte into the city and greater diversity. Did find the downtown very charming and the school rankings strong.

I work in Madison and love it dearly. Ironically, it's where I worked at age 18 (Scotty's), so I can attest to its being remarkably the same as back then (80s). I still love South Orange more, but Madison is a great town. |

I grew up in Madison. It's got great schools, good local culture and is less homogenous than you might guess. I still remember that when I was a soph or junior the Student Council president was a young black woman who was visibly pregnant. Okay, yes, it was the early 70's when the "Season of Love" was still in full heat. But still, I found it amazing and something I eventually felt pride about. We knew that just a few years earlier girls were kicked out of school by the time they were showing. Last I checked Madison had full-day kindergarten available and was looking into a public preK program. Madison is bordered by 3 universities which certainly influences local culture. Some excellent restaurants, too. It has a good range in housing and, best of all, has benefitted from various endowments and estate transfers that have allowed clean industry to develop in limited areas to help manage the taxes. |

interesting dilemma. Both are great towns. I have a jewish friend who just got married and knocked up his wife about a year ago. They needed to move from 3rd and Park in Hoboken and were thinking about Madison or South Orange. He chose SO, but relly regrets it now. His next door neighbor is always peering into his house, and he got totally ripped off on his house. Has major buyers remorse and is now quite bitter. I feel for his wife, who is a sweetheart. Anyways, just sharing an experience of one. Go for Madison! |

Madison is a beautiful town with an incredible school system that is cutting edge with technology. They call it the Rose town and they have a nice website. Go check it out. |
