Aside from past woes when they first came out, Hyundai seems to be on a tear in the automotive world. The new Sonata I would consider purchasing. Its made in the United States and it actually looks good and drives very well. The new Azera was actually compared to a Lexus in a recent Car and Driver magazine. And, the brand new Accel was said to ride as well as the Azera. Don't rule Hyundai out. I have a friend who's had 2 and swears by them.

Hyundai is doing very well. So well, in fact, that the CEO just took a "perp walk" on embezzlement charges. |

I like the America's best warranty angle they've been taking - 1000,000 miles. Says they are standing behind their product and are taking the quality issue off the table. |

The flagship Hyundai line might be just fine, but the Kia line gets the worst reviews in Consumer Reports (among other publications). The Santa Fe looks very nice, actually. Have also heard good things about it. |

Funny ess, the Kia Sedona rated highest in front, side and rear crash tests done by The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety--better than the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. What did Consumer Reports have to say? |

Well, the reality is that in JD Powers Hyundai now is ABOVE Toyota. They are very competitive cars. That said, I don't know about safety ratings -- check IIHS for that. BTW -- the top of the line Hyundai and Kias now *start* at $30k -- and they class themselves against the BMW 5 & 7 series. I saw these cars at the Auto Show in Ny -- gorgeous cars, just hard for me to see paying that much. Pete |

I think Hyundai has licked their original quality problems. However, everything I have read indicates that as far as performance is concerned they are a model generation or two behind the Japanese. Engines tend to be a little rougher, aceleration slower, ride a little choppy, handling not as crisp, etc. If I was looking for a station car or an around town car I would consider them. |

In February, I seriously was considering buying a Hyundai Tucson. A prime attraction was the 100,000 mile warranty and my related assumption was that no company would offer such a warranty unless they were confident in their product. On the test drive it was a bit sluggish in the pep department but had a smooth ride. Probably would have bought it but the dealership (Giant on route 46) wouldn't give me anything near the price listed in the paper and the sales team had an annoying high pressure approach...so I walked out. A few weeks later, I happened to meet someone who works as a repairperson for a different car dealership that sells a variety of car models, including Hyundai. He told me that Hyundais are getting better but still would not purchase a Hyundai himself. More importantly, he also said that they've had some problems getting the company to approve repairs under the warranty due to the stringent coverage conditions (i.e. I think he said that all maintenance services have to be performed by the dealership, many things are deemed to be the fault of the owner, etc.) Of course, I can't say for sure that this is "fact", it's just what I was told. If the warranty is an important consideration for you, maybe you should check the fine print on the warranty coverage to determine the conditions. |

I did a lot of research on the Hyundai Santa Fe and you would be HARD PRESSED to find a vehicle that comes with as many great features, standard, in that price range, as that one does. I went with a Scion XB in the end to save a few bucks but Im wishing I got the Santa Fe sometimes. |

my wife had 2 different hyndai (elantra and sonata) for work. They were both very reliable in the year that she had each car. Only complaint was that the paint quality was a bit low - they didn't weather very well (and that is in the first year - don't know how the paint would hold up over time). |

The new model Sonata and the brand new Azera are supposed to be tremendous cars. Great reviews all around...maybe the best bargains in each respective class.. |

Meand, We bought a 2006 Sonata last September and we are very happy with it. We also were concerned about Hyundai's previous reputation, but the car's been great so far. Tons of features, actually holds 3 kiddy car seats across the back (tight, but it works if needed), air bags everywhere, top notch crash rating, and the dealership in Plainfield has been great to work with. If you go there, ask for Bashear (sp?). In our opinion, a lot of car for the money. Back in Sept we paid about $20,000 for the 6 cylinder. We've been recommending the car to everyone!

Back in the 90's I had an exel, I thought it was awsome that it had rear window defrost..............kept my hands warm while I pushed the piece of *#@! Nowadays Hyundai's junk car reputation is just about gone and their vehicle's are some of the best (for the $$) on the road. I just wish they made a large/full size SUV. |

K_soze, good news--and the reason why I asked--they have just come out with a new mini-van (I know, I'm not a minivan person either, but I may have no choice with gas prices being what they are) that is packed with all kinds of great standard features at a really great price. And, best of all, it got the best crash test rating from IIHS, better than than Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. They're also saying it has more interior room than the Odyssey. I sat in one at the dealership on Saturday and it sure seemed bigger to me. |

Me&, both my parents drive Hyundais. My mom has the Sonata. She got it when I was pregnant with number three and we were able to squeeze 3 carseats back there on occasion. I know they have used the warranty for simple fixes, but considering my parents need that maintenance free aspect, it's worked for them. I will ask for more specific info. I hadn't heard about a new minivan from them. |

Are you considering the Kia Sedona? I rented one for a weekend. I didn't like it at all. If saving money is the reason you're considering it, then perhaps it's worth a look. Then again, you could also buy a used vehicle to save money. I always buy used vehicles. If the minivan has a Hyundai badge on it, it might be related to the Kia Sedona. I see Kia and Hyundai merged in 2000, because Kia was about to go under.

The Hyundai Entourage is nothing like the Kia Sedona, except that they both got the best passenger safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. I don't like the Sedona and would never consider buying it. As I said, I sat in the new Hyundai minivan at the dealer and, I have to say, it was pretty nice. |

Consumer Reports has rated the Hyundai (1995) Tuscon the worst small SUV they've tested. A few years ago when I was looking for a small 4wd/awd wagon type vehicle, I read an article comparing the Subaru Legacy, Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, Hyundai Santa Fe, and whatever the model name of the Jeep that size is. Some of the excerpts included that the Hyundai Santa Fe isn't bad... heads over the Jeep, but they advised sticking a crowbar in your wallet and going another couple thousand for one of the Japanese models instead. So I went for the Subaru, and it was the worst piece of dreck I ever had-- spend 28 days in the shop the first year alone. |

Background: The product was junk. Several years ago, the managers closed the factory and evaluated the nature and frequency of repairs. Factory did not resume production until causes of defects were retooled. Compare this with the marketing strategy of U.S. manufacturers. "If its junk, continue to sell it. If people start to figure out it's junk, put more chrome on it and raise the price." I own a 2002 T-bird...yellow.. you may have seen it around town. I also own a 2006 Hundai elantra. I mostly drive the elantra. Its somewhat more fun than the "bird." Elantra doesn't have all the pep of the 8 cyl. bird. I use the bird on sunny weekends with the top down. Yeh, it looks sharp (more chrome"). If I had to sell one, I'd keep the Hundai. |

Meandtheboys: I just got rid of a Hyundai. It was junk. Poorly made, all kinds of defects, and an absolute nightmare on ice or wet conditions. Underpowered engine, poor transmission, ect. I will never buy another one. My advice, FWIW, spend an extra couple grand and buy American, or spend a few more grand and buy Japanese. Lesson learned: You get what you pay for. |
