This site has good info on rubber mulch, and breaks down the cost per sq. foot for 4" & 6" depths from various suppliers.

Google search: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=rubber+playground+mulch&i e=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

or you could go the route of poured in place rubber pavement (rated for falls up to 12 feet, http://www.uspip.com/

PermaLife has a NJ presence, http://permalife.com/

Does it smell like a rubber tire dump in the warmer weather?

there's rubber mulch at the playground near me, and it is very soft and fun to walk on. On the other hand, it feels sort of yucky to the hand, and leaves black marks on clothes and shoes. Also, it won't biodegrade into your yard the way wood chips will. The playground is by the new library in Union, on Hilton AVe, if you want to check it out.

If you want to experience it, I also think there is rubber mulch in Taylor Park, in Millburn on Main Street. (Someone correct me if I have the wrong park...)

Lowes sells rubber mulch in their garden area. It's made by Dupont.

There are different types of rubber mulch. The type made for garden use may have bits of the steel belts from the tires and isn't suited for playground use for obvious reasons.

Skip the rubber mulch and go with play chips (wood chips). Play chips are cushony enough, and they biodegrade.
