Does anyone know of a good dermatologist who would have a nice bedside manner with a 12 year old girl? A female would be best. Thanks.

Not a female, but Dr Alan Liftin in Livingstone was great with my 7 year old through some pretty tough procedures.

Dr. Gail Mautner, in Millburn, was very good with my daughter. I think she is a good dermatologist all around -- pleasant, receptive to questions, thorough, doesn't brush off concerns, etc. 973 376-8500.

I took my 7 year old daughter to Dr. Liftin - she was mostly seen by his lovely female PA who did all the diagnosing etc. Dr. Liftin came in at the end and just confirmed everything. Would definitely recommend him/them.

Dr. Liftin has a new female partner, Dr. Jessica ???? . . . they are both great. Good Luck.

eliz, are you being sarcastic or would you seriously recommend Dr. Liftin's office? With my family's history with skin cancer, I'd want Dr. Liftin to make the diagnosis, not just confirm what a non-MD would recommend. ARe you dressed and the appt basically over when he comes in or does he too do a thorough check up?

I hate dermatologist's yet they are so necessary anymore !

Thanks!

I'm not being sarcastic - my daughter had a mild (and apparently easily identifiable) skin condition - the PA (physician's assistant) made the diagnosis and Dr. Liftin confirmed it. I have had a skin cancer screening and only met with him. It depends on the case. I felt it was completely professional.

My son and I also use Dr. Liftin and Jessica and are very happy with both of them. My 9-year-old has an unusual skin issue. The first dermatologist we took him too couldn't figure out what it was and washed his hands of it. Dr. Liftin spent quite a lot of time researching my son's issue, decided that it wasn't something to worry about, but is following it closely in case there are changes. He was thorough, and it makes me feel much better that it is being monitored.

They both have an excellent manner with my son. I think your daughter would love Jessica.

Does Dr. Mautner see adults as well? Dr. Orenberg sent my husband and I to Dr. Groisseur (derm group in Verona) and my husband had a terrible experience there. His scheduled appointment was at 7:30 and he wasn't seen until after 8:30. Then, after seeing the doctor for barely 5 minutes, he was given 5-6 pre-printed prescription forms and then sent over the the "skin clinic" where he was told someone would "go over his skin regimen." This turned out to be a bright room where a white-clad woman was there to sell him half of the things on his "regimen." Needless to say, neither one of us plan on going back to that office.

Reesa,

It's funny you say that. Just took my 2 year old to that same practice today. The Dr saw her for less then 5 minutes...looked at her and said her skin was very dry and that she has Eczema. Her pediatrician thinks its very weired, but with all the meds the Dr. prescribed would hopefuly clear all the rashes and help with the itchy skin.
I honestly don't think I want her to go back there.

Dr. Mautner certainly sees adults. I have been going to her for a couple of years, on and off.

Last time I was there, for a suspicious freckle, I had to wait a bit, but when Dr. Mautner came in, she stayed for a while, did not brush off my concerns about the freckle, and answered all my questions without rushing out.

Oh, and she said that if the freckle was worrying me, she would remove it, which she did. The office then followed up with a lab report telling me not to worry. Very thorough. I am a fan.

Definitely Dr. Lifton! He has a great bedside manner, and I see how well he interacts with kids. When I first went to him, he spent a lot of time with me figuring out my rosacia. Subsequent follow-up visits were with Jessica, and she is very good too. Dr. Lifton doesn't want you to be on meds too long, and he pays careful attention to your progress, etc. I agree with Camnol that he will research or look into your issue thoroughly. He really seems to care, and he will even talk to you about the emotional issues, if any, that you may be having due to any skin condition. I never wait long at all -- even when it seems that the waiting room is full! I have been very happy with that practice.
