Help. I'm new to the area and am suffering from seasonal allergies. My crummy health plan website is sending me to Staten Island.

Any local allergists that people would recommend?

Thanks

Dr. Donald Perlman, on Old Short Hills Road, acrosss from St. Barnabas Hospital. 973-736-7722. He belongs to a lot of medical plans. He's been my allergist for more than 20 years, he's accessible, and he knows his stuff.

I went to Dr Perlman in his Jersey Office for years. A lovely, sweet, generous and funny guy. Treats everyone warmly. Finally, though, I had to slam the f*cking door (both literally and fuguratively) and escape the horrible way the practice was run. Maybe it was just the JC office, but you'd have to give a half a day over to getting injections and if you wanted to see him, forget it.

Anyway, regular allergy injections have gone the way of leeches. Now, with the various steroid-based nasal sprays around, the injctions are not necessary. Of course, if your doctor has a large boat payment every month, he will insist you come in for injections every few weeks.

Now I go to an excellent MODERN, and quite young allergist on W 14th St in Manhattan named Samuel Grubman (212) 604-1880 (he's Lizzie's first cousin). No b*llshit, very recently trained on the current thinking in allergy treatment.

Shots or not: depends on your allergy, I think. For some kinds the shots are still recommended.

I like David Brown in Summit a lot - nice guy, very efficient practice, and my life has improved tremendously since I started treatment.

Dr. Perlman - I went to him a couple of times recently - didn't find anything out of the ordinary with the way the office was run. Yes - I had to wait - a while - but they were all very apologectic and plesant.

Thread drift - I've found that I DON'T wait with doctors that DON'T take insurance. That is if I have a 10am appt, I'm seen at 10am. Of course I pay for this "benefit".

You have to wait for Dr. Perlman, but you get to see him and he spends time with you. Mr. T, unless you have a medical degree, I really don't think you should be dispensing medical advice.

Dr. Karen Ziemke, 101 Old Short Hills Rd, West Orange (Atkins-Kent Bldg). Her phone number is 973-736-8899. She is fabulous and I never really have to wait. She does not overbook her appointments. And keep in mind that there are allergy shots that stop the reaction you are having, like a cortisone and also immunotherapy, also commonly called allergy shots. Totally different from each other!
