I'm having my brother, sister-in-law and their daugthers over some time this week. I was planning on just taking them to the local playground, but if it rains, I'm not sure what to do with them. Is Painting the Plates appropriate for these ages?
Any other suggestions. I'd like to keep it to Maplewood-South Orange if possible.
Thanks

Joe, it's not South Orange, Maplewood but the children's museum in Morristown (or other local children's museums mentioned in other threads) would be a wonderful afternoon.

Both SO/M libraries have story times for those ages. The Goat Cafe has story time, too.

Paintin the Plates could be fun if enough adults are there to watch, only it takes 6 days to get the items back. The Art Garden or The Beaded Path (to make necklaces) on Springfield Ave may be better ideas.

Hope for sun! (We've got too many t-ball & soccer games coming for rain...)

you could try Imagine That in Florham Park. It's only 15 minutes away, and has fun stuff for that age range. Or the Newark Museum, which has a one room "zoo," as well as a good natural history area, and a craft room on weekends. If you really want to stick around here, you could go to the pet shop (the Pro Pets on Valley is bigger and a little more fun for kids than the one in M'wood) for a quick outing.

Thanks for these tips. Of course anyone else who wants to chime in should feel free.

We're having some painting/sanding done, and could use some help with the clean-up. We have brightly colored rags, and I hear kids enjoy colorful objects.

Sorry marken.
These kids only enjoy mess up. But do you have any improvised toys? These girls like sharp things. I've been digging through my attic, hoping to find my favorite toys "Johnnie Switchblade" and my all time fave, "Bag O Glass."

Buy some Barbie coloring books, crayons, stickers, glitter glue and other craftsy stuff. Staples is a good source. Cover the kitchen table, or a floor surface with newspaper. Let the girls go to town being creative.

Go to the Rag Shop next to K-Mart and Staples on Prospect in WO. They have so many things for crafts! T-shirts with lots of iron-on stuff, ooodles of jewelry making stuff, tons of coloring and painting supplies, stickers, etc. You are sure to find some rainy day activity ideas there. I also recommend Imagine That! in Florham Park. My 2 year old loved the trains, the instruments and the little play supermarket!
