When I post and I'm already logged on, the username box has Jersey+boy in it. My Password is a bunch of dots. If I hit preview/post message, I get an error message: "Your username/password combination was invalid, or you do not have permission t post to this topic. You may revise your username and password using the form at the bottom of this page." So, I delete the "+", and my username is "Jersey Boy" (no plus.) Post the message with no problem. On to next topic or thread and darn it, there's the "+" again. If I don't go and delete it I'll get the above message again. Does this happen to others? Tom+Reingold, for example? Jersey+Boy |

I have that problem. I posted about it a while back. Several people offered solutions, but there was none for me. I still deal with it. Actually, I use Netscape, and I found that the problem lies in the cookies. If I save the password for the site on my computer it works just fine. However, if I do that, and then go to look at my profile through MOL, it saves 2 different names in memory. Then I have to go through my passwords and delete one of them. Both ways are a bit of an annoyance for me. I now just delete the + before I post. Yes, it does still bother me.

It must be because your username hass an underscore character in it. My username doesn't have one.

Tom, but your username is different from your "name". How would a computer know (in the case of myself and the Mayor) that the two are the same words, one with a underscore, one without? Aren't computers just recognizing coded inputs with no ability to "read" or "think" or "feel." Do McCheeses' computer and mine have the same personality style? That of an a-hole. J.B. |

If I understand your description, the website or the browser seems unhappy with the underscore and converts it to a plus. I sign in with my username, not my personal name.

Now I'm posting with my username as Jersey_boy instead of Tom Reingold (with NO UNDERSCORE). Let's see what happens... J.B. WTF! Why can't I be Jersey Boy without underscore but I CAN be Tom Reingold with no underscore? Damn you Tom Reingold!!!!!!!!!! |

I feel like putting in an underscore would be giving in to the demands of my computer. |

since it needs a character, can you use a non-breaking space to fill up the gap? On a mac, you type option+spacebar, or you could type if it will accept HTML code. Worth a try. |

Check your password manager to see if you have stored your user name and/or password incorrectly. TomR |

TomR, it is stored through a cookie. I don't have it saved through the browser because when I check my profiule it would save another instance of Mayor McCheese. THen I would have to go back and delete one of them. It got too annoying. |

Maybe you should tell your browser not to save your username/password. I don't think you should, since they are saved in a cookie.

FWIW, I have the same problem. Tried several solutions, none worked. So I just delete the +. And life goes on. |

You could always ask Dave and/or Jamie to allow you to change the user name on your account by allowing you to remove the space between your first and last name. This might result in your being unable to post for 24 hours or so but it could be worth it given the reduction/removal of the angst you are feeling now. Joancrystal

I have never understood why there are "names" and "user names"... What is the difference and is there any benefit to them being different from one another or is it only for confusion? It seems some people have multiple "names" w/ same "user name", no? What for? Is this gonna be a "duh"? Be well, all. David |

Some want to change the name that the system displays. But you rarely want your username to change. The username could be a meaningless serial number and be about as useful.

Tom: What I don't get is why the system displays BOTH names. Isn't one sufficient? Be well, all. David |

Maybe it's to keep people honest. I often notice when people change their displayed names by noticing their usernames.

You can display any name you want to the left of your post(including someone else's user name) simply by editing your profile but you can't edit your user [account] name as easily. This appears to require administrative rights most of us don't have. Thus the adviseability of displaying both names. |
