Just wondering how much I should tip a hair stylist if the hair style costs between $55 - $65?

Did he/she wash or did someone else wash your hair?

I always go with at least 15%, so about $9 or $10 if the haircut is $65. Then a few dollars for whoever washes your hair.

20% and $3-$5 to the person who washes my hair (if different), depending on how good a head massage comes with the washing.

I do what greentree does 20% to the hair stylist and $3-5 for the shampoo. When I'm there, it's usually for a color or straightening as well, so the shampoo chick does more than just a rinse, so I usually end up giving her about $5.

What about this scenario:

Assistant applies color, washes hair.
Lead hairdresser cuts hair, dries.
Price for everything is based on the lead hairdresser. Who receives what percentage of the tip?

Tip the hairdresser; s/he splits with assistant. You can say "This is for you and Sue" if you like.

I asked my hairstylist what to do - she said tip the color person 20% - I give my lead haircutter 20% - the assistant gets 20% for the color, and I add $2-5 to whomever rinses me out.

I am a beauty school drop-out and I know the pecking order!

So, if a haircut and color costs 60.00, you give 26.00-29.00 in tips???? That's ridiculous. Thank goodness I'm bald.

CFA, where did you get $29 in tips from a $60 bill? I believe that everyone has indicated 15-20% tips. That would be $9-12 on a $60 cut. VIG - I don't think that I would WANT a $60 cut/color. Who knows what you'd end up with

I agree, the only place I can imagine getting cut and color for $60 is one of those chain places.

I used to tip 20% to the colorist then another $5-$10 to the shampooist who helped. Then, one day, I realized that my colorist drives a Jag and has a second home. I do not have either of these things. Though I believe in every working person making a decent, even nice, living, perhaps there is not a need to tip so much at this very hoity-toity establishment - where the services themselves are already pretty pricey. Now, I decide on a flat dollar amount, based on a percentage, and divide that myself between the colorist and the shampooist.

Handy,

Lydia stated she gives the lead haircutter 20%. 20% of 60.00 is 12.00. She said she gives the assistant 20% for the color. Again, another 12.00. She said she then gives the person who rinses her hair anywhere from 2.00 to 5.00. Do the math. 12 + 12 + 5 = 29.00. Unless I'm missing something here.

I go a barber who charges $14. I tip him $5 normally and $10 at Christmas time. So let's see, that's a 36% tip normally and a 71% tip at Christmas time. I'm not sure I recommend that high a percentage to you women who pay higher fees.

CFA, you are right. Lydia did post that. Nutty. I can't imagine that many other women tip that much, especially given that most women's cut/color cost over 100$

While we are on the subject of tipping, is it still OK not to tip the stylist if he is also the owner of the salon?

Where I go for cut and highlights, the owner cuts my hair. He doesn't seem to expect a tip, but I have been conditioned to tip for so long that this seems awkward to me. Does anyone tip the owner?

As far as the colorist -- yesterday, for example, I had a few things done (highlights and base color and toner, for those keeping score). The total price for these services was so much less than I'd expected (less than what I was charged at a salon in Maplewood, and far better highlights) that I gave a 25% tip without batting an eye. Normally, I would also give 15-20% also.

Someone asked where youcan get a color and cut blow dry for $60?

At the Haircore in Madison 973.765.9610 Ask for Dave.
I have very long hair (so he says) that I like blown straight after getting it cut. The few times I've had it colored as well it's cost me $60. I have always been happy with Dave.

Or Park Ave (also in Madison) 973.377.2080 Ask for Tommy (he's an owner).
My sister says it costs her about $80

Tommy has been doing my sister's hair for more then 15 years. He use to work with Dave at Haircore, but bought PArk Ave several years ago. I started using Dave when Tommy wasn't able to fir me in and stuck with Dave after Tommy left because it was just easier. My sister takes the boys to Dave, and my BIL also uses Dave. But they all get buzzcuts!

I usually give the girl who washes between 2-5 dollars. It depends on how considerate she is to my situation. If she doesn't take a few extra minutes to make sure I'm comfotable, she gets $2. If she takes the extra few minutes I give her $5. Dave usually gets a 20 percent tip.

A funny side note -Dave and Tommy are now brother in laws!

I have very short very thick hair. Highlights and cutting take a long time. I always feel guilty and tip 15 for the cut (a 65 dollar affair) and 5 more for the hairwash. If I get it colored too, it costs well over 200. Ouch.

As an antipodean, I never understood why hair stylists should be tipped at all. Arguably, when you buy a meal you are only paying for the food and not the service, which you pay for with tips. But with a hair cut/color, the service is primarily what you are paying for in the first place, not the shampoo, hair dyes, etc.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is it my responsibility to pay someone else's employee's salary?
