I need to board my dog for a week. Before I drop off my deposit to Preferred Pat Care anyone have any other suggestions -- I wold like to pick my dog up on July 4th and I can't do that at Preferred (I hate to go a day without my dog. She'll be 6 months and about 20 lbs.

We've used Madison Veterinary Hospital (they have boarding) and were happy with them.
I don't know if they have pick-up on July 4th, but it's worth a call!

I used to work at MVH. I wouldn't recommend them.

Me and the Boys-
Oh no... can you private line me on why?
Our pup seemed clean and happy when we picked him up, but I'd love to know how things run while he's there.
Thanks!

I don't board my dog often, but when I have, I've used this place:

Best Friends Pet Care
825 Route 22, West
North Plainfield, NJ 07060
Phone: (908) 822-9200
Fax: (908) 822-1163

I haven't been there in a while, but it's a really nice, new, big, bright, clean facility and all the staff that worked there when we were there seemed really, really nice and absolutely loved Buster. And, from what I could tell, he loved them right back.

I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding a place that will be "open" for pick-up on The Fourth, as it is a national holiday, but you can always ask.

I sure you can work out a time to pick up on the fourth, some one has to be there to feed the dogs right?

Most places will operate with limited staff to care for the animals, but they are not officially open for business, with all that implies in terms of staff and overhead. When I worked at MVH, this was a common argument with boarding clients.

Oh then you can try Camp Bow Wow in Midland Park. They are there everyday from 8 -10 and 5 -7. So you can always pick up.

Yes, that's true. But is sure is a long way to go, and doggie first has to get through the 3-hour interview. Sounds like pre-school in Manhattan!

They're not open on the 4th so I am going to go with Preferred Pet Care and ask a friend if she'll pick up the dog on the third in exchange for a few bottles of wine.

I just came from Preferred and it seems like a really nice place. Cool people, happy dogs and I'm having the friend pick up the dog a day early.

The reason they can't do pick ups on the 4th is that the officeisn't open, just the dog care people are there. Again,I was really impressed with the place.

Preferred is great, as is Camp Bow Wow. Both are the "social" style of boarding, which means your dog plays with other dogs during the day. Our dogs love that (and I'd never want them in a cage all day). I imagine smaller dogs who havent socialized much with other dogs might find the whole thing rather traumatic, however.

Camp Bow Wow uses Parker for the “Interview” because he’s small, strong and very playful. I’ve been amazed at how many times I’ve gone to pick him up and seen dogs fail the interview.

Just out of curiosity, what is involved in the "interview?"

It’s actually pretty intense. First they turn two dogs loose in a room to see how they play, they look to see if the dog will respond to the other dogs dominance or submissiveness. They give one of the dogs a toy, to see if a fight starts, then they take it from one dog an give it to the other. Then they handle the dog to see if he/she bites or nips, or is very physical. They also bring in a water and food bowl, to see if there are any fights. Finally they turn the dog loose in the playground and watch how they play with the others.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good majority of dogs failed based on the food bowl portion of the "interview" (they really should call it what it is, a "test") alone. My dog is very well socialized with humans and dogs. He will tolerate any human putting their hand in his bowl when he's eating, and the kids can yank his tail. But I certainly wouldn't expect him to tolerate the presence of another dog around his food. Seems kind of a little ridiculous and unrealistic to expect most dogs not to get upset when another dog comes near their food. Can't imagine why they would feed them all together in a group situation to begin with.

They don’t feed them in a group, but it’s the easiest way to get two dogs angry at each other. Barking or pushing the other dog around is Ok, but they shouldn’t go too far.

I have my dog stay with our dog sitter. She is great and cheaper than boarding. Plus she is amazing with animals and my dogloves all the company at her house. She also takes care of our house while we are away. Let me know if you want her info.

On Monday, I took a tour of Preferred Pet care and have to say I really liked it and think the pooches will too. The place was airy, incredibly clean and had a fun atmosphere. There are "rooms" with beds! So cool! They have doggie cams to spy on the beasts to make sure everyone is playing nice. It will be our first time boarding with them and drop off's tomorrow, so I'll let you know how they fare on Monday.

I pay her 30.00 a day to board our dog at her house and to watch our house while we are gone. Plus, take in the mail and watch/play with our cat.

I just toured Morris Animal Inn. I like that our dogs won't feel alone, but have their own space and won't meet an unfriendly dog there. It's like a B&B for pets, whereas I would consider PPC more like a camp.

We have had only positive experiences with preferred pet care. We have done long term boarding (5-6 days) and just recently we did doggie day care for a couple days. Our pooch always comes home nice and tired from all the play. In the summer they have little dog pools tha the dogs can romp around in.

We have used Morris Animal Inn. It was different, and one thing that turned my wife and I off was that you had to pay for human contact with the dogs. And it was 15 bucks a pop for a walk, 10 bucks for a treat, and if your dog is used to doing their business outside you have to pay to take them outside. Otherwise, they are supposed to poop there in their space. Atleast that is how it was when we were there 2 years ago.
