perhaps call where you delivered and ask if they have any recomendations. i solicited the help of friends and family who had breastfed when i was having trouble....sometimes you don't need the expert. good luck and hang in there! |

Run, do not walk, to the Lactation Resource Center in Chatham - now on Main Street. These folks are the best! http://www.everythingmom.com/ You can call them, or drop in. Really, they can help. |

Thanks guys. I was really looking for a professional to basically spend the day w/ me. I know there are other options, but that would be my ideal. I've heard about that place in Chatham...can't wait to check it out! - And I bet the hospital has a good option for me. Thanks again! |

taam, Hang in there--breastfeeding is tough in the beginning. Susan Fishman, RN and Certified Lactation Consultant: 973-533-0038 Susan was recommended to me by my son's pediatrician 3 years ago. She came to my home about an hour after I first called her and practically spent the entire day with me. She helped enormously and I can't recommend her enough. Whoever you wind up using, get a receipt and submit a claim with your health insurance company, I did on a whim and was shocked when they actually reimbursed me for 80% of the cost. Good luck to you!

Just out of curiosity, how much does something like a visit from a lactation consultant cost? I'm going to be giving birth in the next month and I'm starting to have anxiety over breastfeeding because so many women I know have had a hard time in the beginning and I really want things to run as smoothly as possible. God knows there will be enough chaos in every other aspect of my life at that point! |

A hearty second for Susan Fishman. She came to my house several times and was WONDERFUL. Definitely give her a call. She'll be there as soon as she can.

Summerbabe, It's been a while (about 3 years to be exact so Susan's rates have probably gone up) but I recall her bill being much less than I expected. Maybe $150 or $175. All I can say is that is was WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! Before giving birth, I also took 2 or 3 hour class on breastfeeding at St. Barnabas that was extremely helpful as well. GL! |

Another endorsement for Susan Fishman. She was terrific when I just needed some reassurance with my younger child, despite that I had breastfed my older child for two years. Even though I knew the mechanics, techniques, and guidelines by heart, and I could tell she was a real expert at teaching it, I just needed someone to tell me everything was going to be okay -- from someone besides my mom, husband and doctor. Even second-time moms need that. Obtaining that confidence is worth every penny. |

And if you haven't called Susan yet, she will call you back right away. She called me from her house down the shore and showed up on a Sunday night around 7pm after driving back. Lactation consultants get tearful emergency phone calls all the time. Goes with the territory. |

Lactation Resource Center also makes home visits...their number is 800-801-MILK They (& likely Susan Fishman) can generally write up a bill with proper insurance codes & it can be submitted - many folks have luck getting reimbursed. If engorgement is an issue, craneosacral massage/polarity therapy can be a help. Good luck! |

Two of the things that I found most helpful: My doula telling me that if I kept at it for two weeks, I would nurse as long as I wanted...that something like 90% of women who give up do so within the first two weeks, that initial problems are more common than people realize, and have nothing to do with being able to develop a great supply and feed long-term. 'The Baby Book' by William Sears. Great, specific , practical trouble shooting tips for evry kind of situation. Much more practical than 'The Womanly Art...' Congratulations! |
