An unsolicited recommendation here. Maplewood Tire is under new ownership in the last 8 months or so. Tony and David, the new guys, are a class act. I've been in three times with two cars, and each experience has been very good. Specifically:

- "Real" mechanics who understand how to fix things, not just swap out expensive parts. They took the time to really check out a problem with my Jetta's fuel sensor which could have cost $800 to fix. They found the source of the problem (gummed up throttle plate) and fixed for $10.

- Very up front about costs. So far, they've been within a couple of bucks of their estimates, and the one time they weren't, they called and explained what was up (warped brake rotor needed to be replaced). They gladly show you the original parts and explain what they found, which is nice for people like me who actually know how to do the work, just don't have the time.

- Willing to do the little extras. For instance, they went and looked up all of the Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) on my car without my asking. They were able to alert me to a recall I had forgotten about. Now, this is also good business sense, as it will surely lead to more work for them. But it's a very honest way to go about it.

Anyway, I will use these guys for pretty much everything. They're 3 for 3 so far, which is better than any dealer I've ever been to.

We've known Tony for over 20 years when he had his garage at the corner of Valley and Millburn Ave. It was disappointing when he decided to go into clean-hands business for a while. Ricky, his #1 mechanic, opened his own place in SO and we followed him to Allstate Motors. He's been great to us over the years and if I didn't feel really loyal to him, I'd go back to Tony. Good luck to him and I hope you'll try one of these two excellent, honest mechanics.

Where is Maplewood Tires? Our mechanic (the one my grandfather and father used) went out of business. I tell you, it was like losing a part of the family! Now, we need someone we can trust.

Just reread my post ----- Allstar Motors, on Valley-----not Allstate. They do own Essex Towing too, so it's really convenient if your car gets towed there to have a great mechanic already there.
