I've gotta bite the bullet. It's like $200 a month to have my hair colored!! And we need a new car.... Has anyone used boxed hair color and been satisfied??? Thanks. |

A friend recommended the Garnier Nutrisse line a couple of months ago and I really like it. It's very straightforward to mix and apply, does not drip, and includes conditioners both in the color mix and a separate one for afterwards. (It happens to be on the less expensive side and occasionally goes on half-price sale.) My hair actually smells nice after I color it. I think the extra conditioning is key for not drying out your hair. Also, on the advice of a student at Hair Core I use Dove Intensive Moisture conditioner on a regular basis and it really does keep my hair soft. The student said the wig she worked on at school was made from yak hair and this moisturizer actually that soft as well. I spring for Biolage Color Protectant shampoo and between these 3 products I am quite satisfied. One thing I found that has made the application process much easier is a little plastic bottle with a "comb top" so that the colorant can literally be combed through your hair. That way is spreads very evenly and is relatively fast to apply. This handy-dandy little applicator bottle cost me $5 at Drug Fair and is re-usable. |

I went back to the box lately. I got the two color system that's out now, L'oreal Couleur Experte, and it turned out fine. I like the color. That said, it is hard to do a great job on highlights yourself--you might try to get a friend to help with that. |

If you want to make the trip...I have somebody I use in Linden. The haircut (which she spends much time on) is $20.00 and the color is about $100.00 which includes full head highlights. I can give you her name/# if interested (Linden is about 1/2 hr from here). |

I've used Garnier Nutrisse for a few years and loved the results - as already noted, it's easy, good for hair, and smells nice. Leaves hair in great condition - better for me than l'Oreal. Good/easy to colour regrowth too. And a lovely range of colours so you can go semi-outrageous, realistic or fantasy. I went back to the salon when I decided to go for bigger effects that need bleaching etc and after surgery, otherwise I'd still be using it. I also second the comb suggestion - you really need a good good one for a thorough job. And if you have a friend with a good eye and a steady hand for highlights, even better (the friend who encouraged me to go with home colour is a former hairdresser). |

Doin' it myself for years and no complaints! Occassionally receive a compliment or two if I play with highlights or the like. $6-8 per box makes one very brave. |

I use Garnier Nutrisse also. I only do it every few months, predominately to cover a few grays. My hair never feels dry. It's pretty easy and believe it or not I rinse it out in the shower, a tip I read in Real Simple Magazine. I don't change the color dramatically*, just do a reddish brown and I'm happy with the results. In the past two days, after not coloring for a few months I got several compliments on the color. Tonight I did it and got distracted so I left it in a little too long. The color I used was Medium Reddish Brown, aka SANGRIA, and my hair is pretty auburn looking right now. |

I have used pretty much all brands, and as long as I take my time, they have all turned out well. Just make sure you pick a color close to your own when first trying it out. |

this might be a dumb question, but... will it harm the hair to do one color for the base and then do highlights from another box? That must be how it goes, right? will it damage my hair to do color on color? Do I need to wait a few days before I do the highlights? thanks = tried l'oreal on the roots - seems fine thanks all!! |

I have done it before only because I had messed up my hair color, no a lot of damage done. There is usually a number on the box you can call for advise. |

Eire, there are special combos with pre-packed highlights: first you do your allovers or roots then, when dry, you strip-in the highlights (or get a trustworthy friend to help out). This way the colours and the chemicals are compatible. I haven't used them but know heaps of folk who do, from all wellknown makes. Am sure you'll be fine! |

So, where do you buy Garnier Nutrisse? I'm sorely tempted. |

MJ: Walgreen's, CVS, Rite-Aid, Drug Fair, etc. It really is easy and I always rinse it out in the shower like VIT does. No mess in the sink! I do keep an old towel around in case of any drips but there are rarely any. I've been known to do it before heading out to church on a Sunday morning. It's that simple! I think the first time takes longer just because of the anxiety factor (and the wisdom of really reading thru all the instructions first - now I just quickly review the timing.) If you can find the comb-top applicator bottle I described earlier it'll give you more confidence that you're spreading the stuff evenly. Red's advice about starting with a color very similar to your own is good advice. And remember that like any wet hair, it looks darker until it dries so try not to panic. Also, my experience is that it lightens a little in the first week or so as you wash it. Have fun! |

I used to buy it really inexpensively from Nat'l Wholesale Liquidators. DOn't ask, I was there once and realized I needed it and lo and behold they have it. BUT, they seem to have ones more for middle-eastern market. Once pack I bought had no gloves and had some type of Arabic instructions! Color worked fine though. This time I bought it at Pathmark because I was there. It was on sale this week, maybe $6 a box. (Walgreens had it recently but I couldn't get there and the price was dirt cheap. Next time I will make a point to stock up. |

Thanks Cathy and VIT: I guess I thought "Garnier Nutrisse" sounded very exotic and would require at least a trip to the Short Hills mall, rather than picking it up along with the dog food and laundry detergent at Pathmark! Cathy, I almost didn't recognize you with your blond hair! It did look terrific though...........Maybe next time you see me I'll be unrecognizable too. |

Remember, chlorine and the sun are both enemies of color-treated hair. Also, the more often you wash your hair the faster the color will fade. |
