Dropped my son off at Daycare in Union this morning, and was driving on Green Lane. A little puppy (I think it's a poodle, and am guessing it's a puppy) was running in the road towards Morris Ave.

I pulled the car over and he ran up to me. He has a collar, but no tags. I stayed there a little bit, hoping someone was out looking for him. No one stopped, and none of the businesses on that road were open yet, so I've brought him home.

Any ideas of where to call? Any shelters or vets in that area? I plan to google and see what comes up, but figured somebody might know.
Can any shelter scan to see if he has a chip?

I keep thinking "If only he was a Maplewood pup, he'd probably be back with his owners by now, thanks to MOL" Union doesn't have any kind of message board, do they?

I'm going to go post "Found" posters (and look for "lost" ones) this afternoon.
Since he's so friendly and has a collar, I'm sure someone must be searching for him.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I would call the police in Union and let them know. The JAC is closed today, but I would call them tomorrow and give them the heads up. They can scan for a chip and can let you know what shelters to call. Some of the local vets may have a scanner as well.

It's very nice of you to take the dog home! He/she will be much more comfortable with you than in a cage at the shelter.

Thanks Camnol,
I called JAC and they will scan for a chip tomorrow. They suggested calling Animal Control in Union (but keeping the dog at my house) I can't find the phone number anywhere online. Anyone have it? (I'm now at work and don't have a phonebook handy)

I had a few minutes, so I called the clerk's office. The woman I spoke with said this is the number for animal control: 908-810-1663

Here is the township's Web site, in case you need it. http://www.uniontownship.com/Contacts.html

Try notifying local vets in that area. A few years ago, one of my cow/co- workers found a puppy at 8am. We called a vet around the corner, but no luck. Animal Control took her and an hour later, her owner went looking for her. He asked at the vet & they were able to tell him that we'd sent her to animal control.

Seagull, Unfortunately there's no single place to go when a pet is lost. All of the suggestions above are good ones. I'd also call animal control and shelters in the towns that border the area of Union where you found the dog. Pets911.com also has an area for posting found dogs.

Seagull,
Did you find the family of this little lost soul?
Hoping for a happy ending.

We've been working with the Kean University/Union police- they haven't had any luck yet either. Unfortunately, the puppy was very frightened by my dog (who kept jumping around like a nut, trying to play) so the pup is staying with a friend for the time being. We've posted a ton of "Found" signs in the area around Kean University. Worst-case-scenario, a friend of ours would like to adopt the pup if it isn't claimed by the owner.
